Marginal. The prices of SSDs have come down enough so that cost isn't the same consideration that it was when SSD were around a dollar a gigabyte, not many years ago.

The average latency of a 5400 RPM spinner is 5.56 ms. An SSD's latency would be roughly 0.01 of that. That'll help quite a bit for some purposes, even if the maximum data rate isn't stellar.

I upgraded a 10 year old PC from a HDD to a cheap SSD and the speed increase was phenomenal. Well worth doing.

    Hi there

    @Steve C

On amazon UK there were decent 250GB Kingston SSD's going for around 37 GBP / EUR or around 33 USD.

It's BONKERS not to get one of these for at least the OS.

Kingston SA400S37/240G SSD A400 240 GB Solid State Drive (2.5 Inch SATA 3): Amazon.co.uk: Computers Accessories

BTW if you get a USB-->SATA adapter and install Windows on the USB (use the Free WintoGoUSB) you can boot windows from the external USB (which if USB3 will still be hugely faster than running OS from internal HDD's). Even with USB2 it gives very acceptable performance - also better than internal HDD for the OS.

So you don't even need to open computer to swap disks.

From the WintoUSB program choose option clone existing system to the external SSD.

    Hi,
It's always worth it to install an ssd
Just remove and leave the existing install intact and clean install 10
Just choose you don't have a activation key and move along.

    10 should self activate.

OK . Guys you convinced me. I will update his laptop to 250GB ssd. I will use budget SSD like Kingston which when I last check was going for around $45 .

Question: Does it make any difference whether I upgrade his laptop to Win10 first , then clone drive to ssd or do it the other way round. In any case I will image his Win 7 drive with Macrium 7 in case the Win10 upgrade fails .

I got into problems trying to clean up his windows 7 before upgrading to windows 10 . I used disk cleaner. After using cleaner , I rebooted the computer as requested , it went into windows upgrading and got stuck at 100% for more than 45 mins. I forced it to shut down , then It went into upgrading again and then got stuck at 35% . I finally booted into safe mode and restored to an earlier condition . Fortunately it returned back to normal . Now I am afraid to use disk cleaner in windows 7 ! I think I had better upgrade to Windows 10 without disk clean. Any ideas why this is happening?

Check the old laptop supports the instructions needed for the 64 bit version of Windows 10 else you might need to install the 32 bit version.

The CMPXCHG16b instruction needs to be supported for 64 bit windows. Support is also needed for Physical Address Extension (PAE), No-eXecute (NX) and Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 (SSE2). Use Coreinfo to check which instructions are supported https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sys...loads/coreinfo

It`s better to upgrade to W10 from within W7 with the ISO file or the ISO file on a USB stick, once you get that done and it`s activated, then you can clean install W10

or you can just clean install W10 and activate it with the W7 key, if he has W7 Home Premium than he must install W10 Home. W7 Pro to W10 Pro etc.

And there is no point in cleaning up W7

A clean install is truly the best way to do it.

Don`t rely on the internet to upgrade to W10.

Simply download the W10 Iso file and buy a 8GB usb stick to put it on and use that to do a clean install.

    Download Windows 10

I tried to install win10 from within win7 using the usb stick that I prepared using MCT . However windows installation could not proceed after downloading updates . Windows indicated his laptop display chipset ( Mobile Intel 4 series Express chipset ) is no longer supported and that the display wont be correct . So I terminated the installation. Checking Intel website confirms that the chipset is indeed no longer supported beyond windows 8. Well thats too bad .
