    Swapping SSDs in 2 Computers

    I have 2 PCs
No. 1 is a i7 920 12 GB Ram and 256 GB SSD running Windows 10 Pro Insider Fast Ring 1809 Ver. 17751.1

No. 2 is i7 3770 32 GB Ram and 256 SSD running Windows 10 Home Insider Skippy 1803 Ver. 18219.1

I would like to swap the SSDs between them so the Windows 10 Pro runs on the faster machine.

Both have been upgraded from Win 7 Pro and Home many moons ago.

    Any problems foreseen regarding activation?

There will be activation problems because you are changing the edition of Windows 10 on the computers between Pro and Home. The above link will hopefully be the solution.

Thanks Navy, I will read that and go from there, I just don't want to lose what I already have.

After reading the supplied link, I went through the recommended steps and it shows " Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account" on both PCs.I guess I just have to have the fortitude to make the SSD swap. Still, a little leary of doing it. I suppose what I'm really looking for is confirmation that it's going to be fool proof.

What options do you have? If you swap the SSD's and can't get them to activate Windows, then swap them back. Or buy a second license for Windows 10 Pro and run Pro on both computers.

I was still under the impression that swapping hardware is not an issue with Windows 10 since the license is attached to the account?

    Hi,
Yeah 10 pro and home upgrade licenses are not interchangeable
If the faster machine was a 7 home premium to 10 home you'd have to buy the 10 pro upgrade for the 10 home for it to be legally 10 pro.

If the 7 home premium was a retail license and so was the 7 pro license you might be able to reenter the correct licenses but i believe the existing 7 pro would have to be reinstalled for 10 home I don't think you can down grade an install from 10 pro to 10 home as inplace only upgrade them.

Oh yeah... that's the keyword for me.. Home and Pro. Now it's coming back.

    Hi,
Yep upgrades are pretty easy as long as the license is retail/ one machine dies and one uses the same ssd/ hdd into a newer or another machine.
But if MS gets 2 hits on the same retail key they will likely kill/ deactivate both pro/.. installs until one calls and explains why 2 machines are using the same key :)

Haha... thanks. I personally haven't encountered this issue since I have an MSDN. Thanks for the refresher course.. :)
