I would do your second option, Image with Macrium, then restore.

You could also play around with Minitool Partition Wizard. I would get this tool to assist in deletes as you may see some hidden partitions that you will also want to reclaim.

Myself I would Macrium to copy, delete all with Mintool and restore. You could also use diskpart to clean old disk.

NOw that the Sony is running with SSD . I am now in the process of cleaning and rearranging the partitions to use the old HDD as a storage medium. I would like to keep the partitions that contain data ( example D&E )but delete the Restore, System and C drive and other not used partitions However if I delete them I will have unassigned space to the left and right of the partition D&E that I want to keep . So how to move D &E partitions to the front of the drive?

Can I image D&E only with Macrium , then delete all partitions forming one large unallocated space ,then reimage them back with Macrium? Is there a simpler way ?
MiniTool Partition Wizard Free will do everything you want.

When I delete partition , what is the format of the deleted partition ? Ex the system partition is fat32 , after I delete the partition will it be unformatted ?

So after I image the relevant partitions to an ext storage medium , I should delete all partitions, create one large simple volume ,format to NTFS and then restore?

Alternatively use disk part to clean and reformat to NTFS . Could be a long process for a 500GB HDD?

When you delete it will be unallocated. When you go to use it you will set the format. You can just do a quick format, not a low level, won't take long at all.

See post #19 &20 for my Computer details. Connection to SSD is Sata. Since its a 2.5 inch SSD (crucial) I had to used double sided tape to hold it inside the 3.5 inch HDD cage. But no issue there no adapter brackets needed.

Definitely no AHCI for this mobo. Sony must have locked out a lot of settings from the bios screens see post #19 .

Anyway I am happy with the upgrade. I did a clean install .Feels like a new machine.
The sad thing is that if AHCI cannot be found for the motherboard, you will not be able to TRIM the SSD. I'm in the same spot, old hardware and no way to update anything to get advanced ATA controllers.

I will never be able to TRIM my SSD and neither will you if your computer has no further support. The SSD makes my machine fast; but, since I'm never able to optimize the SSD with a TRIM command (not even using the Crucial Storage Executive software) my SSD will degrade quicker than its intended lifespan.

Just for discussion. I read on an MSI forum that AHCI is not required to support Trim and it is a function of OS

    and

    Upgrade to SSD from HDD-image.png

    from

Obviously there is a article that must conflict with this.

Go to the Defragment and Optimize Drives screen. See if it is shown as an SSD and see if you can optimize the drive.

It shows my SSD and yes Optimize works . Should I leave it on or should I turn it off. Some suggests turning off auto optimization . BTW should I also optimize the System Reserved?
