I would do your second option, Image with Macrium, then restore.
You could also play around with Minitool Partition Wizard. I would get this tool to assist in deletes as you may see some hidden partitions that you will also want to reclaim.
Myself I would Macrium to copy, delete all with Mintool and restore. You could also use diskpart to clean old disk.
When I delete partition , what is the format of the deleted partition ? Ex the system partition is fat32 , after I delete the partition will it be unformatted ?
So after I image the relevant partitions to an ext storage medium , I should delete all partitions, create one large simple volume ,format to NTFS and then restore?
Alternatively use disk part to clean and reformat to NTFS . Could be a long process for a 500GB HDD?
When you delete it will be unallocated. When you go to use it you will set the format. You can just do a quick format, not a low level, won't take long at all.
The sad thing is that if AHCI cannot be found for the motherboard, you will not be able to TRIM the SSD. I'm in the same spot, old hardware and no way to update anything to get advanced ATA controllers.
I will never be able to TRIM my SSD and neither will you if your computer has no further support. The SSD makes my machine fast; but, since I'm never able to optimize the SSD with a TRIM command (not even using the Crucial Storage Executive software) my SSD will degrade quicker than its intended lifespan.

Just for discussion. I read on an MSI forum that AHCI is not required to support Trim and it is a function of OS
