I agree try it. You can always deploy the ssd somewhere else if it is a no go.

If you delete the drive controller entry in device manager first and change the mode in BIOS/UEFI during the first restart after deleting, it will not affect booting in any way.

If for some obscure reason if does fail to boot, then just change the BIOS/UEFI setting back to IDE. I've made this change on various computers at least a dozen times and it has never failed. I just don't see any reason to run a modern computer with a SATA drive (HDD or SSD) in IDE mode.
But what will happen , if it fails to boot and I have no way to change the storage controller in bios back to IDE after deleting the controller in Device manager? See my Bios images , there is nothing in Advance Bios setup for this capability. Maybe I will then have to load the default values in the bios? This capability is available in the bios exit screen.

The BIOS must be operating in one mode or the other. Windows 10 will pick up which mode the controller is operating in a re-install the appropriate driver for it. I've done it dozens of times and never had an issue.

I think I am not making myself clear. After deleting the IDE in Device manager, I may not be able to change the mode to ACHI since if you look at my bios screen under advance tab there is no option to change it. (Post #19 above)

And Windows 10 will reload the appropriate driver for whichever mode the BIOS sets. If BIOS automatically switches to AHCI then Windows will load the AHCI driver. If the BIOS stays set for IDE mode, then Windows will reload the IDE driver.

OK Thanks . I have purchased the SSD and ready to try it out. BTW is it necessary to update firmware of Crucial SSD before installing in the computer? If so how?

Do you think my bios is corrupted? I don't believe I changed any of the bios setup parameters since I got the computer. Should I load default parameters in the bios ( ie reset) before I do anything?

BTW under IDE /ata/atapi controllers , there are 3 entries : ATA channel 0 , ATA Channel 1 and Std dual channel IDE controller. Do I uninstall all 3 of them?

You should check to see if there is s bios update for the computer. Resetting back to defaults would probably be a good idea.

Delete the dual channel ide controller only.

You would use the SSD manufacturer's software to update the SSD firmware.

I cannot find anything about bios for my computer in the Sony support website. Perhaps too old. There were 2 bios updates mentioned when I use biosagentplus website but I am not sure I trust their findings. Last thing I want is to trash my bios with no chance of recovery . I think its safer to reload default settings first and see what happens before uninstalling the ide controller and swapping out the HDD.

I have a second project : Upgrade my HP Envy Recline HDD to SSD . This one has no hardware or bios issues so I will start a new Topic so as not to mix things up with this current thread.
