I have a 100 GB Win partition, with about 50 GB free. Ever since the 1803 update came out I have been unable to properly update, because, apparently, 50 GB is not sufficient.
Well, now I have to reinstall Windows (for other reasons) and I'm wondering how big I should make my Windows partition.
That should be plenty- clearly trying to resolve that is irrelevant as you've decided on a clean install. Perhaps there was an underlying problem..
What persuaded you there wasn't sufficient space?
The first few times I tried to update to 1803 it ended up with my Win partition being completely filled. I had to delete 50 GB from the temp folder to get the space back. I kept trying to update and it kept ending up with a full partition. As it stands now it tells me I'm running 1803, yet when I run update it starts downloading the 1803 update.
It seemed like it was unable to install the update due to insufficient space.
Please fill out your system specs best you can. It helps diagnose issues. You have some underlying issue if a temp folder is rapidly filling to 50GB. That is not at all normal.

If you are clean installing then Windows itself does not need all that much space, perhaps 12Gb or so. Obviously you need more than that to cover your own files and programs that you will add later but 100Gb would cover any normal usage.
An 'update' installation creates a 'WindowsOld' folder that is the previous installation. This is done so that if anything goes wrong or there are issues then you can revert back to how it was.
Are you sure that has been deleted ? I think it does auto delete after so many days but worth checking.

Yes, I found that with Disc Cleanup, but I think it was only 24 GB or something like that, IIRC. The 50ish GB that gets taken up is entirely in the Windows\temp folder, so part of that is prolly these old files, but part of it must be something else.

Not at all. Like Mooley and others will tell you....I have installed/upgraded in 64GB with tons of apps and data, and still only use about 35GB.
Your case....a clean install would clear up whatever is causing this 50GB runaway. You/we/all of us could spend hours/days figuring out what it is. Unless it is really obvious, you'll spend much more time ferreting it out than a clean install and setup would take. Much more time. And never be 100% sure you got it all.
P.S. - This close to Fall release (1809), a clean install now is even wiser. Get clean and setup and ready. And do a system image backup!!!
