A community effort.
Great news.
I am glad I found this thread.
My Laptop came with Windows 7 and has been upgraded to Win 8 and then W 10 Home over the years.
I was reading an article from Ed Bott and in 20 min I had a free update to Windows 10 Pro.

Under Activation I selected Change Product Key and entered an old unused Windows 7 Professional key I had from my Tech Net days. Twenty min later I am rocking Window 10 Pro and it is activated with a digital license.
My main reason for going Pro was to get better control over Windows Update.
I made the ei.cfg file in case I need to do a clean install.

Perfect. Huge amount of info within all these threads.
I doubt you will have same issue as older Win 7 laptops usually don't have product keys in BIOS.
But you never know.
