Windows 10 Home upgrade to Pro Version

Need some info, I had previously upgraded Window 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro, via the Microsoft Store. I reinstalled Windows 10 from my USB Drive, which I created with the Media Creation Tool, While I had Home version. After reinstalling I realized that it installed Home version, and had to go to the Microsoft Store to install Pro version.

Now that I have the Pro version installed, will using Media Creation tool to setup the USB with Pro Version?

If you use the media creation tool and an 8GB key both versions are on usb Thumbdrive.

I assume you would pick Pro for a clean install although I saw a posting today where Windows picked up key from UEFI. In this case I would imaging there will be a conflict requiring you to key in Pro code you got from Store. Of course Windows could be really smart and go to their servers and see you indeed have Pro.

I may very well be corrected so lets see what other members say.

My Windows 10 Home came with a digital License, no product key required. The upgrade via Microsoft Store just installs it, no product key given either. The original USB I created when I had Windows Home. Using that today did not offer any versions, it just installed and was Home version. Now that it is upgraded to pro I went ahead and downloaded Media Creation Tool, in the hopes it creates version based on my current system.

PS If it picks up version from EFI then it will default to Home as that is what laptop came with.

Absolutely correct. If it came with Home originally, then a Home key is embedded in the firmware. The USB created by the Media Creation Tool includes all versions, Home, Pro, Education and others. In a Clean install Setup will read the key from the firmware and not ask you which version to install.

However, because you upgraded to Pro through the Store previously, then this PC already has a digital licence for Pro in addition to the original one for Home.

This means that once you have clean installed Home you can upgrade it to Pro just by changing the key to the generic Pro key.

You can extract an install.wim file from install.esd in the the ISO (or on the USB flash drive). Once you have the install.wim file for Pro version only, delete the install.esd file (or rename it install.bak) and copy the install.wim file into the sources folder in it's place. Then you will have a USB flash drive that will install Pro only.

Can I ask, just for my knowledge, how does creating USB key that installs Pro only any difference than picking Pro from the list of options. The UEFI stills has the Home key?

Likely I just not following along fast enough. Thanks

Caledon Ken, Iv'e used the Media Creation tool 2 times and it goes straight to install Windows 10 without a prompt. When finished it is always Windows 10 Home. It probably reads my system and goes with the default version.

Thanks. Just reviewed Clean Install tutorial. Appears it asks for key prior to which edition and then as you say it goes about its merry way.

This would impact everyone that upgraded an OEM machine. With a change to the logic, ask the Edition, see if digital entitlement is available then prompt for user input if required would resolve.

    Always learning.
