Upgraded and now have no network

Upgrading an older computer from 1709 16229.19 to 1803 17134.191. All during the upgrade I was downloading from my Ethernet connection thru my network adapter. When it was finished, I noticed that it no longer has a network connection. (Red X on adapter) Troubleshooting said my Ethernet cable was bad/unplugged ?? Changed it anyway with same result. Swapped the ethernet switch ports with another computer on the same switch recycled modem/router/computer.

If I remember correct, the ethernet cable when plugged into the computer shows a connection light? That is not on even though the ethernet switch recognizes it as a GB connection.

Device manager/network adapters show no errors. Possibly a driver problem?

    Appreciate any suggestions

    Mi meebers

Have seen it when the NIC gets stuck.

If desktop hold shift key down and click shut down. Unplugged. Hold power button 10 secs. Plug back in. Power up. Holding shift key down and clicking shutdown bypasses Fast Startup so you get fresh copy of windows.

If laptop do the above only remove battery after unplugging.

See if that brings it back online.

Holy Moly!!! Cannot believe your simple instruction restarted the NIC. (I have a desktop) Restarted it 2 more times without the shift key and it remains connected. After I disabled the device and then enabled it again, it had no effect while troubleshooting it. Thanks Ken much appreciated. Will be putting that "trick" in my big red book.

Electronics are unpredictable. Sometimes, an easy reboot/reset is all it takes.

Agree but on my older Asus desktop if the Intel or Realtec NIC gets hung I have to unplug.

It's the "unplug all power" and then "hold the power button" bit that is key to getting this trick to work. You have to drain all residual charge to clear some internal register or other in the device that's got 'stuck' in an invalid state. I have one laptop where the touchpad stops working once in a blue moon and this is the only way I can get it to work again.

After you do that you should go into BIOS Setup and load defaults then set the CMOS clock before booting since a full power reset can scramble the CMOS settings.

Just asking.. would this constitute a full power reset. The CMOS battery is not removed.

Basically it is an unplug device. The hold the power button is really just to make the process faster as the residual would bleed off even if you didn't do this, it would just take time.

    Thoughts ??

    Hi there
apart from the cmos (just date/time etc) if you can get easy access to the main PC's battery just remove it (first having disconnected from the mains), go for a drink and then put battery back, plus re-connect power supply and re-boot.

    Cheers

You're right. I was thinking of a post earlier in the thread that mentioned removing or replacing the CMOS battery in the laptop and somehow carried that over to your post. My bad.
