How to be offered Ubuntu at time of boot (GNU GRUB?)

So hey -- I've done all the hard work but the last step has perplexed me. I've installed Ubuntu Budgie on a separate partition of my disk so that I can dual boot Win10 or Budgie.

(I'm doing this because I have a mini PC from Beelink and I'm attempting to see if Budgie is a 'lighter' OS than Win10 and, therefore, would help the Apollo Lake unit run even faster.)

My problem is that when I boot up the PC is supposed to ask me which OS I want. It doesn't. I've seen in tutorials that something called the GNU GRUB menu is what I need to have come up.

I know this is a Linux question but is there a Windows way to make Windows offer me a choice of which partition to use at boot?

    Thanks

That was it. I'm actually 'impressed' at how many hoops MS makes you jump and drive and dance thru just to install Linux on the same drive. It's like they wanted to make it real 'easy'.

Has zero to do with Microsoft or Windows. You need a good boot loader, not the one built into Windows. When you use LInux, Grub can mess up the boot loader built into Windows and the MBR. Also it is not up to Microsoft or the Linux foundation to make things easy.

See this. How To Dual Boot Linux Mint And Windows 10 [Beginners FOSS Grub is outdated and Burg is one alternative, but there is never a one fits all solution.

The old way to achieve this type of Dual boot but retain Windows own boot manager was the use of EasyBCD. Things have changed with the software but it is still available for free, (Free registration required), for personal use.

    EasyBCD - NeoSmart Technologies

This may be worth taking a look at

Of course the modern way of using multiple operating systems on a single system is the use of Virtualisation there is a complete section on the forums and Windows 10 pro actually has the software built in or a number of free options are available Virtualization - Windows 10 Forums

Wherever 'fair enough' meets 'whatever'. The truth remains there's a ton of loops to dance through. I was very impressed to learn that the Ubuntu install process includes a partition 'divider/creator' function built in. Which saved a few steps from the last time I tried this.

I saw that but didn't comment there because this wasn't virtual but real-ual.

I've got to say the Budgie ran noticeably faster on my CPU strained mini PC -- for spec fans --

    Beelink AP34 Pro Mini PC Windows 10 Intel Apollo Lake N3450 6GB RAM 64GB ROM 2.4G + 5.8G WiFi 1000M 4 x USB3.0 Dual HDMI BT4.0-in Set-top Boxes from Consumer Electronics on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group

I opened up Google Maps and Keynote as web apps and played a YouTube video -- while running a system monitor type app. Only 2.2 GBs of 6.

Here is Win10 with 8GBs of RAM doing the same job (after a reboot)

I'm not a Linux troll, trust me. This is the first time I've ever installed after years of Virtualbox playing. I still prefer Windows overall, but in this specific situation this Mini PC is probably better suited with Budgie.

    Still playing and testing.

No hoops to dance through. If you want to run multiple Operating Systems not in a Virtual Machine on a single hard drive, or even on a RAID, you have to use a decent Boot Loader. The Windows boot loader and Grub are outdated and have issues, especially Windows. EasyBCD is the best option.

EasyBCD is NOT a boot loader. Punctum.
