Struggling to get W10 to use external HD during Update

Just bought an ASUS netbook/tablet and it is saying W10 needs updating but there is insufficient disk space ( needs 8G apparently).
I have followed a couple of on-line guides and tried adding a 32G micro-SD card, 16 G USB and 1T external HDD but W10 does not seem to recognise any of these for use during the upgrade process. ( Each of these IS available in File Explorer for "normal" use.

Any tips and/or advice gratefully received

Not always, but usually that's because it needs work space and space for windows.old on the C: drive, nowhere else. Is there something, like a big folder of pictures or videos or games you could temporarily move to the 1TB external, delete them off of the C: drive, do the update, and put them back after? Just a thought.

Thank you for the quick reply.

The PC is only a few days old so is "unpolluted" by my data. It has a 32G SSD and has only 3G free; there is no user data that I can move.

    Thanks,

    1) Open disk management > widen these two columns: status and volume > view the characters in each row and make sure that there are no characters that are cut off > post an image into the thread:
Disk Management - How to Post a Screenshot of | Windows 10 Tutorials

    2) Update the specs in the "My Computer" section:

System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums | Windows 10 Tutorials
In the left corner below in your post you find 'My System Specs'.
After clicking it you can find a link a little below that says 'Update your System Spec', click on this link to get to the page where you can fill in your system specs.
System Info - See Your System Specs - Windows 7 Help Forums

Include PSU. cooler, case, peripherals and anything attached to the computer by wired or wireless (mouse, keyboard, headset, printer, xbox, USB wireless network card, etc.)

    3) Open the website for the computer or motherboard manufacturer > support > enter the product or serial number or model > select the operating system > view drivers > post a URL or hyperlink into the thread

    4) Run the BETA log collector and post a zip into this thread:

    Thanks,
I see now. That is a very small system drive. Where you got it from probably had installed the FCU (last fall release) and Windows wants to put the Spring 2018 version on. There may be a recovery partition OEM on it that is sizeable and can be removed. Follow what Zbook wants in his post, and then we can tell what's what. OK?

Thanks Dennis, those are the instructions I have been trying to follow.

When I follow this step, the external device doesn't appear:-
<<Connect your external storage device and wait until you see it appear in the drop-down list under Part B (you might need to select the refresh icon). If the external storage device has enough free space, a green check mark will appear next to the storage drive icon .>>

Thanks Zbook, I'll investigate and provide the additional info later today

The computer has windows 10 build 14393 or 1607.
This was the anniversary update that was released in 2016.
Since that time there were upgrades to 1703, 1709, and 1803.

Were there prior attempts to increase the free space?
Were there other causes of Windows upgrade failures?

Run the Crucial scanner to see whether there are options for a larger size drive:
    Crucial System Scanner | Crucial.com

There are software that can display visuals and/or display file sizes to assist in assessing the files for deletion:
    WinDirStat
    Download WinDirStat
    Treesize
TreeSize Free - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com

There are software that can make it easier to delete files.
This includes the files that are used for troubleshooting computer problems.
Download CCleaner | Clean, optimize tune up your PC, free!

Consider the following options for the upgrade or a work around for the upgrade:
    1) Attach an external drive and move the USERS folder to the external drive > clean other files ( page file, hibernation file, software distribution folder, CBS log, DISM log, shadow copies > attempt upgrade in clean boot
    2) Move the USERS folder > clean install Windows 10 1803 > restore USERS folder > reinstall drivers and applications
    3) If the drive can be replaced with a larger drive > Macrium backup image > clean install > restore backup image onto the larger drive
