    Boca,

What are you trying to do at the moment, update to Ver 1803 using an iso file / USB installation disk? If not, try this as it might force Windows to start behaving itself & recognise the USB stick you want it to use for additional working space during installation {If I understand MS correctly, the additional space USB has to be in addition to any USB containing the new version}.

I suspect that you will get the most effective guidance from other users of 32GB drives. Check the Asus support site and any user forums that they have.

I assume that you have run CleanMgr [Disk clean] to remove existing remnants of older versions & other unnecessary files. This can be required even for new computers [I recently bought a tablet-with-keyboard & it had Ver 1607 just as yours does but it also had a Windows.Old folder that took up valuable space & indicated that Chuwi's production image had been updated but not cleaned up].

    Best of luck,
    Denis

Thanks Zbook; from following your tips, I now have ~9G free. TreeSize was particularly useful.

I think it is always going to be a battle to keep enough spare space; are there any thoughts on why Windows Update does not recognize either the SD card, USB stick or external HD during the Update process?

Hi Try3, Windows is telling me to update to 1803 and, I presume, will stream the update. Thanks,

    1) There may be other causes for the failed upgrade besides free drive space.
    2) Using a windows 10 iso is better than the upgrade assistant when looking for error messages/codes.
    3) For the next upgrade attempt please use a Windows 10 iso:
    Download Windows 10
    4) Before the upgrade place the computer in clean boot:
Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts | Windows 10 Tutorials

Some other steps before the upgrade attempt:
    5) Open administrative command prompt and copy and paste: (repair operating system)
    6) sfc /scannow
    7) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    8) chkdsk /scan
    9) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread
    10) Uninstall any antivirus/firewall software that is not a Microsoft product (always on and manual)
Use the applicable antivirus uninstall tool
    11) Uninstall any drive encryption that is not a Microsoft product
    12) If scannow and restorehealth complete successfully then delete the CBS and DISM logs before the upgrade
    13) Uninstall any software including Asus software that is easy to reinstall after a successful upgrade

    14) If the upgrade works then you are set
    15) If the upgrade fails look for error messages and codes
    16) Run the BETA log collector if the upgrade fails and post a new zip into the thread
    17) If the upgrade fails the Panther logs can be troubleshooted
