Trying to upgrade Windows 10

I've been trying to use the Windows Upgrade in Windows 10, but each time I try it it goes through much of the motions for hours, and after several restarts and a screen that shows 50% - I then get a screen that shows a problem with the download/install - but it does not state what the problem is.

I have also tried the Microsoft Creation Tool, and from a USB thumb drive - I get several blue screens showing the progress and then it just stops.

I am now trying Windows 10 Update Assistant which is now up to 90% and hoping!!

I have used Malwarebytes and did find a bunch of stuff which I deleted.

How is it that a simple upgrade cannot be accomplished?

Nope - Once again "your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart" It got up to 45%. Does anyone have any idea what is going on here - why cant I get the Windows 10 Anniversary Update??

I was just checking my system information, it shows the following:

Windows 10 Home, Version 10.0.16299, Build 16299

Is this the Anniversary Update?

See this tutorial: Windows 10 ISO download to get the ISO for the most recent Spring 2018 update. That will give you 1803 17134.112. Use it to create a flash/thumb drive to upgrade from.

Uninstall your anti-virus if it's anything other than Windows Defender.
Ditto for any firewall other than Windows Defender.
You can reinstall them after the upgrade if you feel it's necessary.

Make sure you have at least 25GB of free space on your boot drive.
Disconnect all external devices. Use just what comes with the Laptop.
Open a Elevated Command Prompt. Run the following commands in sequence.

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
SFC /scannow

There should be no errors reported. If there are, run the commands again, up to 3 times, see if the problems are resolved and you get a clean run.

Restart the computer. Once it's settled down, insert the flash drive and run setup from it. See what happens then.

Many Thanks for the info and link. Ok I did each of the Elevated Commands Prompts in sequence (but separately), I did the Restart - then I got an orange screen - doing something to windows (not sure if was re-figuring or what), then It started up normally. I did the download onto a USB thumb drive - but I'm going to wait till tomorrow to try the install yet again, as it's almost 1:am and I got to get up early this morning. I will post what happens or doesn't happen.

P.S. I know I must remember to uninstall Norton Antivirus.

I'm now trying to turn on the laptop - I press the power button, and it starts beeping with a black screen. ???

How did you try to do this? To do an upgrade you must run the setup.exe when you are already running Windows.

You don't boot from a USB as that would end up being a clean install.

If you have a black screen then retry 3 times or so (power on, power off before Windows starts) and it will eventually push you into safe mode. The black screen is almost certainly a problem with your display driver (which will be replaced by the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter when in Safe mode). Once you are there in Safe Mode, uninstall your normal display driver, reboot and try again.

EDIT: Also unplug everything else - any USB Printers, Storage Devices, Phones, Scanners, Cameras, etc. Unplug the lot - they may not be causing this but it would save time to remove them from the equation.
