Oh, silly me - but of course. So, I'm guessing with using Windows 7 I might not be able to do proper upgrades of the mother board items?
Quite possible. The issue in computing has at times been described as "planned obsolescence" but in practical terms when a product is no longer produced or sold there is no money coming in to keep support or pay programmers to update software. Progress in technology makes changes and not everything keeps up with it, sometimes the go-back machine doesn't work. One item I have on a couple of older Notebooks is a PCMCIA card slot and an Express Card slot [similar items] for which no software is available for running on Win10. I can recall times in building computers in a shop where the computing speed was too fast in the boot process for the HDDs available, had to set the BIOS to show the full boot process so as to allow the HDD to get up to full speed/spin-up in time for the OS to load, CPUs were getting faster.

New hardware with drivers designed to run Windows 10 primarily.

You said the one you have is 10 years old so it was designed for Vista/Windows 7. Some of it's drivers are still from that era even when you installed Windows 10 and updated as many drivers as you could. Manufacturers did not release Windows 10 drivers for all their hardware.

OK - I took the advice and stayed with Windows 10, went to Micro Computer and got a new Dell Inspiron 3565, which is very similar to our old Dell. I'm now doing all the updates - 3 items that keep saying Awaiting install one of which is the Feature Update version 1803 which has finally begun to install. So, after I get all the Windows updates done, then I have to go to the Dell Support site and make sure I have all the driver updates installed. Micro Computers has also done an encasement of the HD from our old unit and they tell us every thing is there.

That's a low end laptop. I hope you upgraded the ram from 4GB to at least 8GB.

7th Generation AMD E2-9000 Processor with Radeon R2 Graphics.

Good luck though. Should be smoother than your older laptop.

The only install having problems is the Feature update to Windows 10, version 1803 - the install failed. I went to the Dell Support page and used the Support Assist. I needed one driver update (BIOS) which I have installed. I have no third party anti virus installed so I'm hoping it was the BIOS update that was required to get the version 1803 installed - now I have to start the whole process over with the download - again!

Use the Media Creation Tool to download the ISO. Right click on the ISO and select Mount. Run Setup from the mounted ISO. No need to ever download the files more than once.

That laptop comes with McAfee, Disable it until 1803 is installed.

This has been a real trial for you, not surprised you are forgetting things.

Just do one thing at a time and be patient, it will work out, and no, I'm not an optimist, I'm a learnfromexperienceist

Your very kind and I appreciate it. I may stop for the night, my wife wants to do some of this (on the new Dell) - so maybe I'll leave this Windows update for her.
