Fresh install

Depends on whether you elect to keep your files and apps or get rid of them. If you get rid of them then you end up with almost a clean install. If you keep them you reset the OS but keep your files and some apps.

@bikeit, it's not clear what you mean by "do a fresh install within windows". What exactly are you trying to achieve and how were you going to do it?

Do you mean resetting Windows?

or the Fresh Start in Defender?

If so, you'll loose all installed apps that aren't supplied as part of Windows, but you will have the option to keep your user files.

If you mean an in-place repair install you can keep everything.

Fresh Start is described in this tutorial Fresh Start Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials that I linked to in Post #3. You will loose all installed apps but be able to keep user files. Read the tutorial for full details.

Why do you think you need a Fresh Start? There may be other less destructive ways to solve your problems.

I think what they were advising was a Clean Install. That would remove everything and give you a clean install of Windows 10 with nothing but the apps supplied by Microsoft as part of Windows. You'd need to back up all your user files and documents before trying that as they'd be lost too.

Personally I'd have the original Windows transferred from the old drive to the new one, especially if you have installed a lot of your own software. You don't want to have to reinstall everything. If you find you have too much 'crap' you could always do a clean install later.

Whatever you do, make sure you have a backup of all your user files and documents before you go ahead.

That would be down to the speed of an SSD compared to the old HDD. You certainly don't want to do a clean install or a refresh. You'd have to reinstall Photoshop and Lightroom for a start, do you still have the install media and the keys? If it's working well I'd leave it as it is.
