Thanks. Given that, you could well be extremely lucky if you are able to end up with a consistent, bootable Windows. It also depends on how far the update - or upgrade? had progressed. At most you may be lucky enough to have something bootable from which you can rescue things. Absolutely no certainty as to whether you will recover a stable Windows.

i placed back the backup and ran dism again. this is the ouput:

    C:\>dism /Image:c:\ /Scratchdir:C:\src /Cleanup-Image /Startcomponentcleanup

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
    Version: 10.0.14393.0

    Image Version: 10.0.14393.0

    Error: 0x800f0806

The operation could not be completed due to pending operations.

The DISM log file can be found at X:\windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

    Attachment 195845

    how should i proceed?

Assuming you mean you have recovered the registry backup, what now happens when you try to boot?

I note your Windows version seems extremely old, suggesting it has not been updating for a long time, or at least, has not upgraded. Is there any reason for that?

Have you checked your disk yet as I suggested above?

I think you're going to have to recover what you can and clean install.

However, if you use disk imaging, as we strongly urge users to do as a matter of routine (e.g. Macrium reflect (free) + external storage for disk image sets) you have an easy option- restore the last Windows image you created.

Note that clean installing in the usual way will mean you would get build 1803, which does not have the best reputation, unfortunately. No license key needed.

Tutorials available on downloading iso's and doing a clean install.

If you need to boot the PC to recover any data not backed up, there's Kyhi's boot disk (win 10 based) from the top of the Software and Apps section here.

    Wow - that IS remarkable...

(Note: for interest, Macrium Reflect's boot medium includes a very handy utility called Fixboot, and as Kyhi's disk includes Macrium R, it's available there).

What you don't want just yet is for Windows to start downloading a major upgrade. I suggest you disconnect from the internet, or set both Wifi and ethernet to metered connection for now to stop that. (Tutorials available- yes, both can be so set)

I would suggest you do some integrity checks... as you've restored the registry backup, there may be some inconsistencies between your registry, installed progs, system files, update records...

    Run chkdsk C: /scan
    and if ok
    SFC /SCANNOW

What is your current Windows version? (Windows key + R, winver).

Do you have Home or Pro?

As soon as you are happy with your current installation, the first thing is to start using disk imaging routinely. It sounds as if you may be a long way behind, and upgrades carry risk- especially to 1803.

Use Macrium Reflect (free) - install it, create its boot medium, create your first base image of Windows, saving it to a large external disk. (It's handy to set the drive letter to e.g. R using disk management so it always uses the same drive letter, or use Macrium's option to use the disk's hardware id.

Click the bottom left option to have it automatically select all Windows partitions.

Hi, I did say you did not want Windows update to start and suggested you should disconnect your internet... see above. Which of those steps have you done?
