Need to reset computer that has bitlocker activated

We have a computer with Bitlocker (TPM) on it and I use Sophos to track the recovery key. Each time you use the recovery key it resets the key and tells Sophos the new key. We don't have the windows password to log on so we cannot change the boot pin and I need to do a computer reset which will wipe out Sophos as it does a factory reset basically. How do I get the recovery key once the computer has been reset? Will the reset turn off Bitlocker? I am worried that we will lose total access to the PC.

Hello @chocaholic, and welcome to Ten Forums.

If you like, you could do a clean install of Windows 10 on the PC to start fresh.

No idea how Sophos works, so always make disk image and backup your Bitlocker recovery key before playing with TPM. Then you have two options:

    1. Before doing reset, at admin prompt enter command to decrypt your drive & remove key protectors if any:

    manage-bde -off C:

    Uninstall/deactivate Sophos, restart, reset OS.

    2. Decrypt your data to external disk (must be at least equal size), recovery key needed:

    repair-bde C: <TargetVolume>: -rp 111111-222222-333333-444444-555555-666666-777777-888888
You must use your real TargetVolume and RecoveryKey.

Perform clean install of OS, restore data from external drive. TPM will be reset before new use so keep your recovery key backup.

The problem was resolved. I was able to work out the admin password after all. I had a typo when I changed the password. I tried lots of characters around it and got it.
