You might try making a Windows 10 installation CD using the Media Creation tool.

    Download Windows 10

    Hi Ben,

OK, Now it talks about having a Win 10 License.

First this was a Win 7, that was all pre installed and no disc's of any kind. then did the free win 10 Up-Grade thing, so also no disc's or licenses.

    so now what?

See if "Upgrade to current version" is one of the options. Also, if you are asked for an installation key, it may be printed right on the computer itself.

OK, making a CD is easy, except I don't have any that are big enough to hold 8+ Gigs as it says it needs. So it also says that you can make the file on a USB stick.

Got a 32 Gig one of those, But how do you get the dead computer to run off of a USB stick?

My Windows 10 CD uses 3.54 gigabytes. To answer your question about the USB stick, start the computer and watch the screen closely for something like "Press Esc for setup". Restart the computer, press the appropriate key and look for "Boot Menu" or "Boot Order". If you change the boot order, be sure to save the change when exiting setup. Be advised that some laptops can't boot off a USB stick.

"Now it talks about having a Win 10 License" You already have a Win10 license. I don't recall the exact sequence of the process you are using, but if you are asked for it, you should have an option to answer "I don't have a product key" or something like that and continue from there. When the install is completed your computer should become automatically activated.

    “Well re installed windows.” Excellent.
--- Make sure your WU’s are all up-to-date and keep them up-to-date.

Make a pristine system image backup: maintain a scheduled system image backup.
--- I use Macrium Reflect Free during the last week of each month manually in order for my computer to be ready for the following month’s WU’s and activity. Additionally I also save my data separately.

On “Thank You Microsoft!”: Regardless of what OS anyone has, there is no one size fits all or set-it-and-forget-it.
--- Keep your computer up-to-date, well maintained and secure.
--- I depend on the excellent information and advice on these forums to keep my computers in top shape.
