I just got a system crash today.
Win10.
Will not boot. Can't repair. Did chkdsk and it is fine. Tried everything. Nothing works.
Went to install a new Win10 and I get a message: Can't install on that disk because it is partition style GPT.
Never heard of such a thing. And that's the disk that the existing win10 is installed on.
This doesn't make sense to me.
Anyone got any ideas could perhaps help me with this?

Do you use disk imaging as we constantly recommend? If you do, you can simply recover to a previous working state relatively quickly and painlessly by restoring a previously created disk image (e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + external storage for disk image sets).
Assuming you haven't discovered the value of that, and if you don't have a full backup of everything on C: but you want to recover files, you can boot your PC using Kyhi's bootable disk available from the top of the Software and Apps section here. As you will see- it gives you a Win 10 environment.
When you've done that, also run HD Tune (on that disk) to check your system disk.
(chkdsk does NOT check the health of your whole disk - it performs a different and specific function).

Thanks for that. I have an MS image and a macrium. But neither work. I suspect I might have done them wrongly. There's not much of the disks written on I see when I look at them today.
I find I can go to the command prompt (X: drive) and go to C: so maybe I can start moving stuff off the disk before doing anything else.
Hi, it will be MUCH easier for you to use Kyhi's boot disk - then you can use file explorer etc. to view and copy files and folders e.g. to a USB disk.
Good that you tried to create a disk image.
Kyhi's disk also has Macrium Reflect on it; have you tried exploring your MR image? You can view and copy the files and folders in it- or have you already tried that?
(Also note that if you were on e.g. build 1709, and you use a current iso, that will be build 1803).
I thought I had that Kyhi's disk but I can't find it today. I'll get it again.
Looked at that link all about GPT and I don't understand what's happening with my machine. All the links seem to be talking about fixing up your disk to be GPT which it must be if it is a UEFI BIOS, which mine is.
But I shouldn't need any fixing up - my disk is already GPT - which is what Windows Install is complaining about.
But there should be nothing to complain about - it has already had Windows installed on it.
Unless I'm looking at the wrong partition or something. I'm going by available space. How else can I choose from my disk/partition list to find the right one to point the install media to? That'd be the one that already has a (broken) Win10 install on.
And I wonder why the system can't fix a broken Win10 install?
p.s. top of software and apps? where/what? I'm not sure i've got the right thing. I've got a thing called win-PESEx86.. is that it?

If you are trying to install into an existing partition, that simply won't work.If Installing Windows 10 with UEFI
Your motherboard must support UEFI 2.0 or later to be able to install 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 10 with UEFI.
A) Delete all partitions/volumes on the Drive # (ex: Drive 0) that you want to install Windows 10 with UEFI on until that Drive # shows as unallocated space. (see screenshot below)
For a clean UEFI re-install for Win 10, expect to delete 4 - four- partitions.
Perhaps you are confusing a clean install with an upgrade or in-place upgrade repair install. These can ONLY be done if you can boot normally to Windows.

The opposite seems to be the case here. It's because your PC has booted from the install media in Legacy mode. This means it is looking for an MBR disk to install on and finds a GPT one.For example, if you receive the error message: “Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is not of the GPT partition style”, it’s because your PC is booted in UEFI mode, but your hard drive is not configured for UEFI mode.
The solution is to make sure you boot from the install media in UEFI mode. How did you make the install media? Is it a USB made by the Microsoft Media Creation Tool? If so, it contains the boot files for both UEFI and Legacy boot. You need to make sure you are boot from the usb in UEFI boot mode.
When you hit F12 at power up to get the boot choice menu you may see the usb listed twice, once for the legacy mode and again as a UEFI boot. It's important to choose the right one. See this thread...

well this is the third time I've tried to respond. each time after posting the system tells me my message was too short...
so I'm not going all through it again.
cut to the chase: I need a clean disk for an install? That's it, right?
If you have 1 or more data partitions on the disk which you have created, you don't need to delete those.
