Upgrade to Win 10 error without error code

Hello! I hope I am posting in the right forum. I am currently using Win10 ver 1703 and I would like to upgrade to ver 1803. I have downloaded the ISO through Media Creation Tool, and run the setup file from the mounted image.

I already tried installing a few times before, but it always failed in around 80% with "windows 10 installation has failed". So I searched around and figured to delete my SoftwareDistribution folder and then let it download itself again, and running Disk Cleanup to erase previous windows installations and all kinds of other system files provided. Then I tried to install again.

I ran the setup file, chose to check the updates, and after that, the setup prompted me to start installation so I closed all my work and start. I watched the process and when the installation reached 91%, the percent changed to 'will restart in a few moments'. I guess it can mean that it actually already reached 100% and then restarting, but it just didn't how it that way. But before the restart can even start, the dark blue window closed and revealed a "Windows 10 installation has failed" mini window without any error code.

I would like to note that right before the installation begin (after the updates check), I disconnected the internet because some tips I have read told me to do that.

Did somebody know what should I recheck to make sure this didn't happen? I included pretty much details in the process so it can be clearer

Hi, you're on 1703, not 1709, so I'm wondering why you're on an old build. Have you disabled Windows update at any point, or do you have a metered internet connection?

Please post a screenshot of your Update History.

Please run the Windows update troubleshooter.

Also run (from an admin command prompt)
chkdsk c: /scan

and if ok
SFC /SCANNOW

Also post a screenshot of your partitions using Minitool Partition Wizard (not Disk Management), showing all text in columns.

Thank you very much!

I have been running v1703 since I bought the laptop (which is in January 2018) so I think I can say it came with the laptop. My updates history is empty, maybe from the effect of deleting SoftwareDistribution folder, but I do recall the laptop always trying to update to version 1709 and always failed. Every time it tells me to restart, it always failed, and I think it'll never succeed so I don't really pay attention to it, but I restarted every time and it failed every time. I think I can solve the problem by installing v1803 with the ISO, that's why I'm trying to update now.

Chkdsk didn't found any errors.

I am currently running sfc scannow and WU troubleshooter, but I don't really understand the partition part, can you please tell me more? Do you mean the first page where it shows all the c: and d: and so on?

Windows key + R, winver

Try this:
In the Cortana search bar, type
Control panel, then click Programs and Features, then Installed Updates
Click on that
This should show you sthg like this:

Please post an equivalent screenshot, including the date. This, lacking the Update History should show when you received an update, if at all.

That demonstrates you are receiving updates for your current build, so Windows update is functional.

Please post the result of sfc /scannow and WU troubleshooter

However your partition screenshot tells me almost nothing; it does not show the detail I gave you in my example above.

Please remove any external disks.

So,
a. Please download and install Minitool PW from here:
Best Free Partition Manager for Windows | MiniTool Partition Wizard Free
b. Launch it
c. Make sure the text in all columns is visible by dragging the columns so they are wide enough to show all the text in each column.
d. Check you can see the information as in mine
e. Take a screenshot of all the disks. (As you have so many disks, you may need more than 1 screenshot)
f. Post the screenshot

Sfc scannow didn't find any errors, and I am currently downloading the installer you sent me.

But the troubleshooter notified me that there are pending updates. I noticed there are 2, one of them is feature update to v1803. Should I try to install it by the WU instead of the ISO?

Edit: the feature update just disappeared

Looking first at your system drive:
1. There's no unallocated space. When Win 10 upgrades it typically creates a new Recovery partition of about 450-560 Mb.
- so best create some unallocated space of, say, 600Mb.
(If it doesn't find that space but does find it on another drive, it will create the partition on another drive- not ideal).

2. Your C: is small - I guess there should be enough space for Windows.old to be created- that will be about the same as your existing Windows folder. However you could then be constrained for free disk space.

3. You have *system_drv
This seems unique to Lenovo - and I'm not familiar with this.
However: note

Lenovo SYSTEM_DRV Partition

The SYSTEM_DRV partition is a small partition on Lenovo computer and quite unique, which is Lenovo's current version of the standard Windows 7/8/10 BIOS system partition. This partition contains the Rescue&Recovery environment and some essential system files like boot loader that makes Windows boot. It could exist in Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, and Windows 10.

Generally, the SYSTEM_DRV partition has no drive letter (hidden partition) and only seen in Disk Management. We recommend you not to delete the SYSTEM DRV Partition in Lenovo computers, if you do so, you will face the problem that you can’t boot up your Lenovo.

I simply don't know how this is handled in Win 10, so hope someone familiar with Lenovo can comment.

Likewise Winre_drv appears to be a name used by Lenovo for the Windows recovery partition I mentioned above.

- assuming the iso you have is correct for your PC (base language, x64/x86...) there's absolutely no point in doing that- it would just create another large file, and fail in the same way.

Do you have a 3rd party AV running? If so, uninstall it before attempting the upgrade again after having created some unallocated space.

I would suggest you shrink E (rightwards) and extend C into the unallocated space, leaving 600Mb or more unallocated space after C:

Use Minitool PW to do that.

After that if if still fails, time to look at Windows update logs. See (and investigate the links):

Should I create the 600mb partition by shrinking E and extending C or should I do something to the winre_drv one?

And I recall when I downloaded the iso, I choose for both x32 and x64, my laptop is x64. Is it alright?

I would suggest you shrink E (rightwards) and extend C into the unallocated space, leaving 600Mb or more unallocated space after C:

I don't know anything about Lenovo partitions in particular; you'd have to ask Lenovo or their forum e.g. unless someone comments here.

iso's only support either x64 or x32. An iso can be used with Home or Pro. To upgrade you must use the same base language.
