@ bru, Would you be willing to try the install again today?
--- If it still fails, please try the following.

When Ben asked you to run the Update Assistant did you get a report about anything?

    You can also try
Windows Update Troubleshooter in Control Panel
System and Security < Fix problems with Windows Update
--- I’ve only used this once and it did show a report that was helpful

    Windows Update Troubleshooter

Last week I investigated an issue one of my friends had. Please know I’m not saying this is your problem but this is a hands-on problem in investigating what my friend was up against.
His 1709 > 1803 finally succeeded after failing updates for 5 days.
But his graphics wasn’t the same: the computer still runs well but the Resolution in his display settings was running at a recommended 1024 x 768 x 900 instead of the original recommended 1280 x 1024.
Device manager reported issues with the installed driver.
Intel’s website searched the computer and reported the graphics driver isn’t upgradeable anymore for Windows 10. I don’t recall the exact wording but that description is a summary of how I remember it.
Fortunately, that investigation turned out to be an easy one unlike many other situations.

I don't have the computer at the moment but next time I can try. It has failed multiple times (8 I think), several with the initial error I reported (the generic one) and then several with the next error (800...).

I have run the troubleshooter several times as well but will report exactly what it says. It may be a bit before I can report all this.

Did you try looking at the failed installation log files for errors? Search for 'error' towards the end of the files to find clues for what might be causing problems. See under log files here https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...upgrade-errors Note the use of the setupdiag tool for analysis.

I once had a failed installation due to a corrupted system partitition - see Solution for Failed Windows 10 Update Installation Error 0x80004005

The clue to this problem was the command bcdedit /export <yourfilename> failed with the error "The store export operation has failed. The handle is invalid". You might want to check out this possibility.

This is another command I have used multiple times with success so might be worth a try.

From elevsted command prompt, copy and paste
    rundll32.exe pnpclean.dll,RunDLL_PnpClean /DRIVERS /MAXCLEAN

I have the computer available but am unclear how to find the log files. Can someone help? Where do I find this setupdiag tool? I apologize that I am having trouble figuring it out.

It's all explained in the link I gave you - you need to do some work yourself!

Thanks for the help. The computer should upgrade and it doesn't. There are hundreds if not thousands of reports of the same problems. Yes there will be a "reason" according to MS, its logs or whatever, but its BS.

My brother has an HP laptop that had the same problem. In the end he gave up and did a clean install of 1803. That worked where the upgrade failed.

@bru "There's a thread but honestly there isn't much else to do but a clean install which I will not do at this point"
    I agree with Bree's post #28.
--- Do you have a particular reason not to do so?

In the meantime while you are holding back, what about the update troubleshooters post #21.
They are easy to run unless there are a myriad of problems maybe plus if I remember correctly you should have a final report.
--- I probably missed it but what about the Update Assistant?

Because I don't feel confident. I don't even know how to do it. And I have a working computer. What if I try a clean install and it fails?
