Yep, driver incompatibility... no guarantee it will run Win 10 effectively... (but some reports of machines from 2002 on running it.. depends if you're lucky).

    ASUS P5-LD2-SE

    Pentium D @ 2.8Ghz

    4GB PC5300 RAM (Corsair)

~using onboard GFX instead of the NVidea card I previously had in it

Onboard audio also being used - all working

I know this system is old but it should handle W10 with relative ease

I've also tried swapping it all over to an ASUS P5-LD2-VM-DH with no change in performance

See what resources are being used- task manager, resource monitor... Check you've sufficient free RAM, space on C: and that you're not downloading something...

CTRL + SHIFT + ESC is an easy way...

Also try booting to SAFE MODE - from the power button on the login screen. (SHIFT + left click restart, then navigate thru the menus)

Being it`s an older PC, I would have just made a Image of Windows 7 and then imaged 7 onto a new SSD, not a hard drive.

Some report success running W10 on a Pentium D... but that's far from the only factor of course.
    Should a Pentium D 945 3.4Ghz compatible with Windows - Microsoft Community

Yeah, if it were for me I would have. But I had a spare HDD lying around (I'm a CCTV installer) and as he won't be using it for anything taxing I just opted for that.

I am now one of those people! Solved. Although I can't take any credit. I just left it alone for a while and when I returned it was behaving normally. Restarted it a few times and the performance is now fine! I guess maybe it was doing something in the background after the install. It even accepted the XP driver for the sound card!

    Thanks for all the replies!
