    1803 fails to install

edit: It turns out one out of four computers tried to install 1803 on 1-Jun and failed. So my issue has turned from wondering where the upgrade is to wondering why it fails to install on a computer that had no issues with previous updates and is configured the same as my others which all successfully installed 1803.

Hi, this sort of question has been asked many times.
    1. MS typically phases roll-outs of build upgrades over 2-3 months
    2. MS prioritises PCs and PC configurations that are likely to 'have the best experience' - i.e. not have problems
    3. If MS deems your PC unlikely to support it, presumably you won't be offered it

The present situation with problems even after major updates following the build for some have left some people reverting to 1709. There are some bugs, and have been and are some incompatible situations created.

Make sure you have a current disk image (e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) ) before you get what you wish for.

Finally, is Windows update actually working for you? I note your reference to a metered connection. Have you received the recent 1709 update? (Check the News section for details- thread per update per build).

I would just wait since there is probably a known issue for your PCs. I always defer feature updates for 3 months to allow time for MS sort out the issues raised by the instant updaters / beta testers. I might leave 1803 a while longer since it seems one of the more unreliable updates.

I know its asked, I also know that MS sucks at distributing their major updates. It is an April update, yet here we are past mid June and I don't have it on 50% of my computers. This isn't an MS forum but maybe if enough people complain about their poor updating process something might change. Windows Update works fine on each computer, yet only two have the update. See my response below for further information. I should have had the update on all my computers by now and so should everyone else. MS's puffing their chest out touting how well they've done with distributing this update is BS. It should have been distributed to everyone by now. They'll probably have another one available by the time some get this one (that's hyperbole but its not entirely impossible)

Thanks for assuming there is a "known issue" with my PCs, there is not. I thought I explained it but I guess not. I have four PCs, all are as basic as can be and all are configured exactly the same. Two have received 1803 (within a day or so of each other), the other two have not and it has been a few weeks since the others did.

Can you be sure there are no "known issues"? All four may seem to have exactly the same software and configuration, but their hardware may well differ. MS don't list every known issue, so it's difficult to tell. For example, in previous rollouts certain Broadcom adapters had issues where MS put a block on the rollout for those PCs until they were resolved.

If hardware issues are the case here, it's safest to wait patiently until windows update offers 1803.

Decided to take a look at one computer and surprise I see that "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1803 (3) Last failed install attempt on ‎6/‎1/‎2018 - 0xc1900101". My guess is the other will have the same error. So there you go, MS can't install the update when there has never been a problem installing one before.

There are references to that error message - so something to research.

Here's one of the more perhaps dramatic but specific approaches as an example (I make no recommendation whatsoever!)

Start off by saying computer three successfully installed 1803 on 15-Jun. The primary user of the computer didn't notice so I was not aware. So that was three out of four successfully installed. As posted above #4 failed to install 1803 with error 0xc1900101

Like I said, that computer and all of mine are bare bones, basically only used for the internet. I let MS update everything, drivers etc. so if MS can't install its own update its not my computer's faults. A quick search shows many with the same issue. I am not going to edit the registry, go in to BIOS settings, etc. as I have read some had to do (and you linked) with varying degrees of success. Maybe I'll do checkdisk and sfc/scannow and some other basic troubleshooting but that's it.

I tried a manual install just now and it failed. smh

Microsoft has made something that should be seamless to the user, a source of frustration for some users It's not even a consistent thing, some upgrades are no problems, others that upgraded with no problems in the past will fail with no obvious reason. My guess is it's due to the millions of different configurations, programs, and hardware in place on the windows based computers around the world.

Here's a link that covers some basic Quick fixes a you might try Quick fixes - Windows IT Pro | Microsoft Docs

I have 5 computers in my household, only one had difficulty upgrading to 1803, that was resolved by performing a 'clean boot' then installing the upgrade. Following the directions exactly I found it was easily done and easy to undo. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...oot-in-windows

Scroll down to the heading How to perform a clean boot in Windows and under the subheading Use the following steps to perform a clean boot select Windows 10 to open that menu for instructions on performing a clean boot, and how to undo that action.

That link was from the Resolve Windows 10 upgrade errors about 3/4 of the way down the page at Resolve Windows 10 upgrade errors: Technical information for IT Pros s IT Blog

I've read your post's, I know your computers are nearly identical, but something's preventing the last device from upgrading. Maybe something here will get that last one to 1803.

    Good luck

Why not just download from the catalog and manually install Microsoft Update Catalog
