Update requires deinstallion of Avira app that is not installed

Windows 10 wants to install an update on my computer, but it tells me that I have to deinstall the Avira Antivir app, first. The trouble is, I deinstalled that app one year ago (which was quite a hazzle. I had to download an Avira deinstallation app first, and do some operations in safe mode).
However, I do not see that app in my list, and I was sure up to now that the leech had gone, already.
How can I either make windows notice that the app is gone, or weed out the remains of Avira?

Ultimately you may have to search the registry, and with due preparatory caution, delete entries.

A good tool for that is O&O's free registry editor. (Unlike regedit, search lists all finds, rather than stopping after each one).

So I installed this O&O tool and deleted 10 entries that somehow had Avira in them. Quite russian roulette style but I'm desperate. Windows still asks me to deinstall Avira Antivir. This is a deja vu with Terminator 3. The program is the virus. Well I guess, I will download this Avira's removal tool again. I thought I had it removed last year with that tool, but it seems to be more complicated. Thanks everybody anyway. This doesn't seem to be a common disease.

Often, it is easier to REINSTALL Avira then use the uninstall tool.

    Hi,
Please note that the mentioned Avira AntiVir Removal Tool has nothing to with uninstall of Avira Antivirus. As cited on the download page, this tool is available to remove specific malware threats from your computer and not updated since 2010.

If you use the recent Avira Antivirus program and the Windows Upgrade process tells you to remove the AV software, the most likely solution will be the removal of avipbb.sys from your storage drive, except within the following locations:

    C:\Windows\System32\driversC:\Program Files (x86)\Avira\Antivirus (64bit)C:\Program Files\Avira\Antivirus (32bit)
