Windows 10: Laptop stuck on 0% updating for several days

Laptop stuck on 0% updating for several days

My partner's laptop is completely stuck on the updating page after a restart and several days later it will not go further than 0%. When I checked online for a solution every method seemed to suggest that the update was running in the background, whereas with my partner's we cannot get the computer to start up at all.

Is there an easy fix for this or is it case of just buying a new one?

That has the problem I keep running into - they keep suggesting downloading things. I can't get the computer to do anything from the updating screen?

When you say update what exactly are you updating ( or were updating when the issue started) - Microsoft and others provide a number of standalone options for various options which you could download and use to "kickstart and complete the update from a USB stick or DVD.

There are also various Toolkits available to allow you to diagnose the exact issue present and correct it - There should not be a need to replace anything except in the case of catastrophic hardware failure which is actually rather rare

It's one of the normal scheduled updates, where it reboots, downloads whatever it is it's downloading and then supposedly logs you back in. It's locked up after rebooting with no access to the log in screen.

OK as you have a working system you can create the required tools to use on your partners system - you will need a USB thumb drive (Stick) of at least 8GB capacity

Create windows install media as described here making sure if asked that you select the correct windows version Home/Pro Etc and 32 or 64 bit (this depends on which installer you are offered)
Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

You can then use the USB created to repair the system automatically or to follow the further instructions to use the USB stick to perform an upgrade install to the existing Windows operating system which will correct errors and not remove any files or installed programs. Yoo can also chose to wipe the hard drive completely and install a fresh copy but lose data and installed programs so is a last choice option

This Installer USB will use the latest version of Windows 10 Available version 1803 so if you have not already done so it may be worth while using this to upgrade any systems that are running the older so would be best to chose the full installer package if offered (it does Home and Pro in both 32 % 64 Bit) and can be retained to ac as your emergency access tool until the next major upgrade, when it can be upgraded

if you wish to investigate more deeply before proceeding further there are other options below that needs the USB to open a special safe mode

To use safe mode as a tool to investigate ...
Open a command prompt as described here
Open Command Prompt at Boot in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

Enter Safe mode using Option 3 here
Boot into Safe Mode on Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

Once in safe mode you can read logs and such to try and work out exactly what you need to do

All the above tutorials are written by our Admin @Brink who is based in the US so will be available to better explain any issues you have before you proceed and I have made him aware of this thread

Have you tried the reset tutorial?
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

Either download the file using another PC if available, or simply copy the text and create the file.

The last post in the thread seems to indicate that solved it, although the first, not.

Post #4 offers a different version of that.

No USB. I'm not that computer savvy and I have no idea how downloading a file to a completely different computer would help?

Edit: looks like I'm getting a new laptop for him. Thanks anyway.

You don't need to buy a new laptop. Getting the old laptop working again is not as hard as you think. There are many members here that will assist you as you go. The reason you need another computers is so that you can access and download the needed programs or files. Plus you'll have the access to this forum so you can ask any questions. In the worse case scenario you can download the latest Windows 10 ISO and do a clean install.
