    Windows 10 update broke my OS


    So I decided to do a windows update. I'm using windows 10. After it updated for about 2 hours, it would not boot into the OS. I tried rolling back the update using the BIOS settings but I just keep getting error messages, when I set it to "windows rollback" it just boots back into BIOS. I try to set it to a previous version but the version I get is very old and broken, and when I try to access the start menu from this version, it doesn't work. Luckily, I can still access task manager but i can't even access the start menu from THERE. Not to mention how I can't even use a RESTORE POINT because for some reason, it doesn't MAKE restore points. I would just like to go back to using windows before the update. I have no idea which version it is exactly though.

    Hi, I'll just comment on certain points:
    1. System Restore is typically disabled by MS ater an upgrade to a new major build - assuming that's what you've experienced. All prior restore points are (quite correctly) deleted as they are totally irrelevant in the context of the new build. No system restore points are created unless you specifically enable it. Note that System Restore is not regarded or found to be completely reliable.

    System Restore could never conceivably restore a previous build.

    2. You can determine your current build by e.g. using a boot disk such as Kyhi's. available from the top of the Software and Apps section here. Booting your PC from that into a version of Win 10. Then examine e.g. explorer.exe on your hard disk, rt click, Properties, Details and you should see the build number listed.

    How do you deal with this sort of situation? First you take precautions. Anything can go wrong at any time. You disk might fail. Your PC become -as it is- unbootable. This is why we constantly urge users to use disk imaging (e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) routinely. If you maintain disk image sets you can recover from bad situations to a previous working state relatively stress free and fairly quickly.

    Where do you go from here? You say you have tried to roll back to the previous build and that has failed.

    I suggest you make sure you have a backup of all important information, then check your disk, then clean install. Once you have a working PC, create your first disk image as soon as you can.

    Others may well have further ideas.
