    Upgrade 1803 Failed

The upgrade 1803 failed at 43% with the Stopcode "DRIVER PNP WATCHDOG".

I could not find any useful information at windows.com/stopcode.

The message at Settings > Updates is "Last failed installed attempt..... 0xc1900101".

AV is Windows Defender. Firewall is W10 at default settings.

And of course..... we are now in a continuous loop of download.... install.... failed..... revert to 1709..... download....and so on, and so on.

    Any thoughts....?

Seems you're not the only one...
I have been trying to install the April2018 Update but I get a blue screen with the Stop Code PNP DRIVER WATCHDOG. Is there a workaround?
I have the same question (326)
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...aefdcd3?auth=1

I've skimmed through that thread, and another that spawned from it. There seems to have been no solution found yet for that particular OP, but it wouldn't necessarily have helped you if there was. These types of problems are specific to the hardware and driver on your PC.

The 'PNP' refers to plug and play, and the suggestions in the threads above suspected the video driver. Analysis of your dump files and install log files may hold the clue to what precisely your problem is. We need an expert like @zbook if we're going to shed some light on this.

I can at least anticipate the first question that will be asked by the experts. After a BSOD...

Please run this beta log collector using extract and post a zip into this thread:

    Bree, thanks for your reply.

The only external hardware that I have connected to this machine (Lenovo PC) is the KB; Mouse; Monitor (Samsung); Router (via Ethernet) and an SD card.

The only item that I could disconnect is the SD card connected via a USB port. But I doubt if that would resolve the issue.

Question : What information does the 10Forums Log Collector actually collect? I know my way around W10 so could I not go and look at these "logs"..? If I knew where to find them, that is.

Internal hardware like the touchpad or the video are also plug and play, though I guess you'd find it difficult to actually unplug them :)

The simplest way to see exactly what it collects is to run it. The scripts tell you what is being collected as they run, and the collection is put in a zip file on your desktop so you can see what has been collected. The whole process is entirely local to the PC, nothing gets sent anywhere. It's then up to you to post the results if you wish.

If you have the Pro version, I would just defer feature upgrades for at least 3 months to allow time for MS to sort out the bugs.

Thanks Bree and Steve for your replies.

Is there any way that one can determine which PNP driver is causing the problem?

Most of those to whom I provide assistance have W10 Home and many of them are elderly. The machine described in a previous Post on this Thread is the first machine on which I have experienced this problem. I anticipate that this won't be the only one.

I have used the "Remind me later" option to delay the installation, but the next time the user Restarts the machine the upgrade is going to to attempt to install. If I can find the PNP driver before then, that would be a big help.

Can I use previously downloaded 1803 upgrade

I have set my computer to 'metered connection' to avoid continuous downloads of 1803 and subsequent reversions to 1709. I now download from the Microsoft Update Catalog when a new update is available.

If I wish to attempt an 1803 upgrade, are the previous downloads to my laptop available (and where)?

Since my download speeds are 6Mbps at best I would rather not waste half an evening using the normal update service.

The error for the particular driver concerned will have been recorded in one or more of the Setup log files. I'm not an expert on interpreting them (not needed to become one - yet), others may be along shortly who are.

In the mean time, Microsoft provide some detailed guidance on resolving upgrade errors. There are sections on the various error codes and on the structure of the log files. As you are used to providing support, you should have the experience to make good use of this.

Microsoft | Resolve Windows 10 upgrade errors : Technical information for IT Pros

I'd start by reading the Log files section, there are worked examples there...
