Home to Pro Key not working

    Hello!
I have an Alienware and it comes with a Home license, now I bought a Pro key but Windows refuses to install as says there's a problem with the hardware, should I ask Dell support?

Yes. Is the computer still under warranty?

What a pity and greedy thing, a gaming and expensive laptop with a Home version!
You can fix this by your self, do this job now and you will save time and money later.
You can download a legit ISO installation file of Windows Home/Pro, load it in a USB pen drive and you need to add a file which will during installation allow you to choose the Pro version, add the right product key and you done.

How to select the Pro version: http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-se...ing-windows-10

If you try to download the iso image from Microsoft, they will not show you the Pro version because they see you have a Home version so you can use this Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool: https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/techno...-download-tool

And the manufacturer's local service can't help you unless you pay because this upgrade doesn't fit in the warranty since the laptop works just fine.

I upgraded without a hitch by selecting Settings / Activation / Change Product Key. Have you tried this method?

So is the installation of Home or Pro 100% same just change the key?

The MCT/Media Creation Tool process that can be used to get the install USB or .iso has a choice to get them for another PC, doesn't rely upon what is installed, gives more choices. I get the largest download that contains both x86 and x64 versions.

Pretty much. When you install Home, PRO coding is mostly installed but you need to enter a PRO key to unlock the extra features.

That's what I did and the upgrade was quite quick.

Question is why does it not go both ways (not much additional coding required).. i.e. locking Pro features with a Home key? That would be cool.. not that anyone will ever use it but cool is cool .. Home to Pro Key not working-tooth.gif!

I haven't tested it lately but at one time you could go to from Pro to Education with a product key change, and back to Pro with another change key. I think you can go Pro > Enterprise and Enterprise > Pro with a product key change to. I don't think you have ever been able to go back to Home though, and have no idea why its like that? At one time there were quit a few "bought a Pro key on E-Bay but PC won't activate" And no easy way to just go back to Home.
