Using the MCT shown I use a 16GB Thumb drive, get the dual-version [x86/32-bit and x64/64-bit] then have room to store the updates as they come out for use on other computers such as those with slow or no Internet service.

Let`s not confuse him. Let`s just get the Iso downloaded and on the usb stick.

I've downloaded 1803 and put it on a USB drive with Rufus.

OK, hopefully you`ve backed up your important data.

OK so you have your computer up and running, now put the usb stick in a usb slot and open the usb stick with windows explorer. (It should do this automatically, but sometimes it doesn`t)

It should look like this. Now just click on setup and the install/update will begin.

Hopefully all goes well, when the PC reboots in a bit, pull the usb stick out or else it will start the install all over again. ( Do not walk away from the PC )

Here's my suspection of your problem:
Your Windows 10 was upgraded from Windows 7 which has a 100 MB System Reserved partition, a 450 MB Recovery partition was created during this upgrade. Now Windows try to update to 1803, it might try to create another Recovery partition by shrinking your C drive.

The problem with MBR disk is you can only have 4 partitions max and the 4th one will be created as Logical partition instead of a regular primary partition. Update might run into problem with this layout.

A normal fresh install of Windows will have a 550 MB Systems Reserved and C drive.

Since you've already have Macrium, you can use it to expand the System Reserved to 550 MB, delete the Recovery Partition then try to update to 1803 again.
In addition, the Boot Drive Control is set to UEFI and Legacy OPRM. Is there other option besides this ? can you set to boot just Legacy only ? If yes, set it to boot for MBR only.

I didn`t think Macrium could do those type of things, It looks like what you wanted to say didn`t show up

Partition Wizard on the other hand will. Mike posted the link in reply #24

I never run into these issues because I do not use a System Reserved partition.

And yes, you can delete that Recovery partition, you don`t need it.

OK. I started setup from the stick and it stopped with the message that Windows can't be installed because the PC has unsupported disk layout for UEFI firmware -- the same message i got when I started this thread. Macrium will resize partitions, I believe, but if the partition was too small why am I getting the error message about firmware?

    Yes exactly what I`m wondering.

I`ve been using Macrium Reflect for years ( the free version ) and I`ve never seen a way to use it to manage partitions.

I`ve always used Partition Wizard Professional.

I hope Navy sees this thread, he would know exactly what to do.

Might be the disk is MBR and needs to be GPT to support UEFI installation. Easily fixed with MiniTool, or maybe Partition Wizard Pro you mentioned. UEFI needs more than 3 primary partitions, no "logicals". MBR format only supports up to 3. UEFI needs 4.

    But why ?

Nothing should have to be changed.
