    Sorry that it didn't resolve your problems, but the Control Panel tweaks seemed to help a little, at least. Please let me know if you find the magic bullet that lets you complete the upgrade.

    (PS: I had already run sfc several times, too.)

    I've just run SFC /scannow within the cmd window and it is reporting corrupt files that it can't fix.

    (Click start and type 'cmd' in the run command, right click on cmd.exe and select 'Run as an Administrator' and then type 'SFC /scannow'.)

    I normally run this at least three times but let me know if it reports any issues.

    Have you tried re-downloading the media creation tool. Took 3 tries on my father's 8.1 machine using update this PC option. It hung in the same place you described around 30% of the update portion, after the file download. This is a thing, corrupted downloads, so I've heard.

    Thanks for the suggestion, I have downloaded a few times, all end in the same (unfortunate) result.

    Yeah it's a mystery. My father had the exact same thing you are describing and it worked. But reading through the problems people are having here, it struck me that back in the day, Many had problems with read/write speeds when reformatting, just as the faster RPM hard drives were coming out circa 2000/2001. Slowing down the hard drive in the bios temporarily, often allowed the install to complete.

    It just makes me wonder if it's certain USB 3 drives, or hard drives that are more predisposed to this behavior. Just food for thought . As an Aside, my father did have an older PC. I do not know what his hardware was, but it was home built, and it was budget, A6 trinity APu, so, 2010?

    If I stumble across something, I'll post it here, but if you get it sussed out, I would be very interested in how.

    I had to run the Media creation tool directly from an admin account just to get it to download an iso. just running it and supplying admin password was not enough.

    Thanks, I fixed this by uninstalling two updates as defined in the Windows 7 forum.

    I've upgraded

    I undertook a number of actions, so I'm not sure if I needed to do all of these but here goes:

    1/ Unplug all USB devices except the mouse and keyboard;
    2/ Uninstall all versions of SQL Server via Control Panel>Remove Programs;
    3/ Uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials via Control Panel> Remove Programs;
    4/ Within Control Panel>Location>Administration - Set to English (United States) and click both check boxes to copy to all accounts;
    5/ Within the Run command box, type MSconfig;
    6/ Under General select Selective Startup and check the 'Load System Services' and Load Startup Items;
    7/ Reboot your PC;
    8/ Run Setup from your ISO or Memory Stick.

    This worked for me.... Let me know if it sorts your problem out.

    (Remember to edit MSConfig again and select normal boot after the install works)

    Well done, you just beat me to it! I decided to give up waiting for MS to help.

    I cloned my system drive. Then did a clean install of Windows 8 (not 8.1, as my MS Key was for 8). It activated straight away. Then I upgraded to Windows 10, no problems whatsoever, took just about 80 minutes in total. There was no need to upgrade to 8.1 first.

    I would advise anyone with problems to go that way.
