    Windows 10 Version 1803 - Error 0x800f0900 & 0x8007001F - 0x20006

I have tried numerous times to upgrade my desktop computer using Windows Update, the Windows 10 Update Assistant, and even using a Windows 10 1803 ISO.

The Windows Update screen just gives me the following error with option to try again. but nothing changes.
Feature Update to Windows 10, Version 1803 - Error 0x800f0900
The Windows 10 Update Assistant and ISO method restarts, then gets to 0%, then restarts and says that it is restoring my previous operating system.

I have tried cleaning out my C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder and even restoring my computer to an earlier time in the hope of some success, but still no luck.

I have even tried a tool on this forum here, without success.

    Any ideas? :)

Thanks for that, bbinnard, but unfortunately setupmem.dmp doesn't exist on my computer. Neither do the Rollback directory folders. I guess it's because my installation doesn't even start.

I think I might try a clean boot.

Be aware of the following warning from Microsoft in the link above.

We strongly recommend that you do not use the System Configuration utility to change the advanced boot options on the computer unless a Microsoft support engineer directs you to do this. Doing this may make the computer unusable.
I did that, and changed from the Normal Startup, and I couldn't get back into Windows. I had to restore a Macrium Reflect image.

I had a problem upgrading on one of my wife's laptops, it's an ASUS notebook from 2013. This link helped me, actually the instructions to perform a clean boot was what worked. I believe possibly it was a driver issue causing it to error out, even though drivers were up to date. Check the first link for a huge amount of information concerning error codes, and their causes.

This link is from the "Clean Boot" link from Microsoft on that site. Follow the directions exactly for Windows 10 to set up the clean boot, then to reset after trying the upgrade, again follow the directions exactly. It was much easier than I thought setting up for a clean boot, then resetting back to normal, maybe 30 seconds for each.

    Good luck :)

Thanks, but Clean Boot didn't work either.
I have even manually shut down almost everything running in Task Manager.

I think it must be a driver issue, but I have gone through Device Manager and updated everything that I could.

@Kari and I were chatting earlier this week, and he observed that when Windows Update fails for any reason, especially on an upgrade, it seems to help a lot if you run this exact command from an administrative command prompt before trying again on the affected machine:

    Code:
    cmd.exe /c Cleanmgr /sageset:65535 & Cleanmgr /sagerun:65535

Inside Disk Cleanup (which this line of code calls) check EVERY BOX shown, then let it clean everything up. I ran into issues on an Insider Preview upgrade Tues-Weds and, sure enough, after running this cleanup on the affected PC, the next attempted update worked.

Give it a try: it might help.

Thanks for the tip, Ed, but unfortunately, it didn't work.
Same problem. I get about a second where it says "Initializing", then it fails with the following error.

Feature Update to Windows 10, Version 1803 - Error 0x800f0900

I appreciate the help, though. :)

Drat! Sorry it didn't work. I'd be thinking about a clean install at this point, if I were you. Just make sure you have an image backup of your current install that you can mine for stuff you might otherwise miss. In fact, if you make an image backup using Macrium Reflect Free, you can use viboot later to mount that image to access anything you might need later on.

I'll give that a try Ed. It seems to clean up quite a list of things. After updating did you 'miss' anything?
