Oh NO! Did 1803 ISO eliminate In-Place Update?

Since I've tried more times than I care to count to install the 1803 update I thought I'd give the In-Place update a try. To do this you have to boot from the 1803 ISO, which made on 09 May using the Media Creation Tool. I remember that when I did the 2017 Spring Creator Update (or whatever it was called) I had to do the same thing, so I pretty much remember the steps:

Boot from the USB drive containing the ISO file, accept the language & country settings, pick Install (not Repair), and then....Oh no! the only options are Install & save data files, or Clean install. The option to save files and applications is GONE! The screen did say that to do an In-place update that saves files & applications you have to mount the ISO in Windows and run the Setup file. This method fails every time for me. So since I am not willing to do a Clean install I just exited and returned to 1709.

Did I miss something along the way? If so I'd dearly love to know what it is. When it says "save data files" does it really mean files & applications?

The in-place upgrade cannot be started when you boot from Windows install media. Booting to Windows install media, you can only do a clean install.

To do in-place upgrade preserving your installed apps and software and personal files, you must boot normally to Windows desktop, then run Setup.exe from install media.

See options 4, 5 or 6 in this tutorial: Upgrade to Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

No, in fact you added something unnecessary. You booted from the USB install media.

To start an in-place update you boot to your currently installed windows, mount the ISO (or plug in the usb you made from it) then find Setup.exe on the root of that drive and run it.

This will give you the option to keep your files and keep all your installed apps. See this tutorial. It's focus is on doing an in-place install of the same version as a way to repair a damaged system, but it clearly describes how to do the in-place upgrade.

OK, thanks - at least I know I wasn't missing or mis-interpreting anything.

I've already tried all of the methods for running Setup from the mounted ISO file or directly from the Media Creation tool and they all fail for the same obscure reason (failure in 2nd boot phase due to "Page fault in non- paged area.") So I'll mark this post as solved and wait for the cows to come home.

That is a completely different problem @bbinnard, and one that can often be solved. The two-part error code setup provides can help identify the cause of the failure. Knowing that we could offer ways to get round it.

I did (finally) solve the problem. It wasn't exactly simple to do, but the actual steps needed really are pretty straightforward. THis posting tells the whole story: How I fixed my 1803 Upgrade Blue Screen failure

And no cows were required :)
