    version 1803

I haven't been offered to update to 1803 by windows
but during the month of may many update failed beginning with 9
like 9nb.... or 9wd... dealing with xbox video and other non relevant issues for me.
Do I miss something crucial when staying in 1709?
    thank you

To upgrade from 1709 to 1803 it can be performed by:
    a) in the left lower corner type windows updates > update windows
    b) open the Microsoft Windows 10 iso website > update
    c) open the Microsoft Windows 10 iso website > create a bootable Windows 10 iso > perform an in place upgrade repair

No, nothing crucial. Stay on 1709 and you should still get all the security updates and quality updates until 1709 reaches end of support on April 9, 2019.

If the 'Features Update to Windows 10, version 1803' doesn't appear in windows update on your PC then it's safest not to try the manual upgrade. Windows Update has blocks in place for machines with known issues until Microsoft has a fix in place, a manual upgrade bypasses these blocks.

Those are Store apps updates and handled quite separately by the Store. Windows Update isn't involved. If they are truly not relevant to you, then you can open the Microsoft Store and click the '...' menu. In 'Settings' you can turn off 'Update apps automatically' then manually choose to update only the apps that are relevant (including the Store itself).

I already did what zbook suggested and upgraded to 1803
nothing critical happened and now I'm in 1803
I didn't understand why I should get the iso and when should I use the repair
bree suggestions seems the healthiest since I don't know yet if everything functions as before
    thank you all

I too manually updated to 1803 using the ISO. But I was confident that it would be successful as the 'Features Update to Windows 10, version 1803' was listed from day one when I manually checked for updates. If it doesn't appear there it doesn't necessarily mean the upgrade will fail, but it does increase the risk that it may.

Glad to hear 1803 is working for you.

    Neither do I. :)

The built-in apps like Calculator, Groove Music and Photos are all Store Apps. You don't need a Microsoft account to update these, or to install any free app from the Store that you fancy. Unless you have deliberately uninstalled it, the Microsoft Store should be in the All apps list on your Start menu.

If you do you won't be able to go back to your previous version should you run into problems down the line. Windows.old should be automatically deleted 10 days after updating to 1803. If you are happy, you can delete it earlier. The best way is to follow this tutorial.

to delete windows.old turned out to be tough
even as administrator, after taking ownership, and setting security to give me full control
but I guess it will be solved in the next few days
    thanks for everything
