Good work @twful, and a useful analysis of the time/effort tradeoffs involved in clean install vs. lengthy repair. If you persist (and your history with 1709 suggests you will do just that) you will find a way through this morass.
    Keep plugging away!

@zbook - I'm done with Driver Verifier. Thankfully, only three major hardware drivers cause a failure -- Intel HD Graphics (igdkmd64.sys, impcd.sys, HECLX64.SYS) & Intel Centrino N 1000 (Netwswoo.sys), IDT Audio (stwrt.sys) and Bluetooth drivers (Bcbtums, Btwampfl, Btwaudio, Btwavdt, Btwl2cap). No other drivers caused a crash.

    Bluetooth:
Firstly, fixing Bluetooth is very unlikely given the Dell released driver (Dell Wireless 365 Bluetooth Module Application; Version: 6.2.0.9600 ,A02; Release Date: 05 Jan 2012; File Name: R226746.exe)

Is/has been incompatible with Windows 10 since day 1. Upon trying to install you get a quick notification saying the App can't run on this PC. Compatibility settings don't work either.

The next option (Broadcom) doesn’t have any drivers on offer anymore. The only way I got BT to work on my system was via installing Widcomm BT_12.0.1.0240_Broadcom (which was available for download on Broadcom website during initial Windows 10 release and since being removed) with a few tweaks. Luckily I do have a copy of that.
So, trying to fix BT drivers is out of the question with the only option being a reinstall after an Upgrade and hope it works.

    Intel Drivers:
HD Graphics - The currently installed HD graphics version (via Windows updates), 8.15.10.2900 is the latest available on the Dell website.
Upgrade to 1803 version fails with 0xc1900101-0x30017 error-intel-driver-assistant-report.jpg

There are no older updates available on the site anymore. Needless to say, it crashed again with the verfier. I'd posted a query on their support site and here’s the reply.
    Code:
Your processor, graphics, and wireless are not supported on Windows 10.

Count yourself lucky that you made it as far as W10 1709.

There is nothing you can do except to get a new/newer laptop.
Centrino N1000 – The installed version Is 15.4.1.1 and the one available on Dell website is
Upgrade to 1803 version fails with 0xc1900101-0x30017 error-intel-centrino.jpg

However, I’m having trouble uninstalling the current version and installing the older one because it doesn’t show up either in the “Programs and Features” or in the Intel installation directory. But it does in Device manager. Uninstalling here as little effect. It simply crops back up upon a restart. So, tried running the old installer but it doesn’t go through with the installation. It simply aborts very early in the installation. No error messages, nothing to indicate a problem. Tried fixing it with the Microsoft installation troubleshooter but the trouble shooter can’t find anything wrong. It doesn’t show up in the Registry either (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall.
Any advice on how to fix this?

    IDT Audio driver:
The installed version is same as that available on the Dell website. Again, no older versions are available anymore. Tried an uninstall and a reinstall while forcing Windows to do an update but still no luck. It crashes with the verifier.

Since fixing the misbehaing drivers seems unlikely, what would be the next step? Try an upgrade by uninstalling the rogue devices and see if it works after an upgrade. Awaiting your inputs.

There are numerous Windows upgrade error codes. When the problems are fixed with one error code another could appear as the final error code. The only way to find out is to make an attempted upgrade. To optimally perform the upgrade any misbehaving driver using Windows driver verifier ideally should be uninstalled or replaced with a compatible driver. If there is no compatible driver then the upgrade can be attempted using only Microsoft default drivers. This is what would happen with a clean install (all Microsoft default drivers and some Nvidia/Intel/component manufacturer compatible drivers).

Make sure Windows driver verifier is off.

Run through this upgrade check list.
When the check list has been completed, perform a Windows 10 upgrade with a new Windows 10 iso and no connection to the internet. Perform updates only after a successful upgrade. Before the upgrade if available use a hardware method to turn off wifi.

If the Windows upgrade passes then you are set.
Then you will search for compatible drivers.
If there are no compatible drivers then it may be possible to find alternative methods to continue using the computer (USB attachments etc.)

If the Windows upgrade is not successful then use Everything software to find the Panther logs. Any logs that are found you can zip and post into the thread for troubleshooting.

If the problems are identified in the logs then they can be troubleshooted. If the problems cannot be identified or if the problems cannot be fixed then plan a clean install followed by restoring with a backup image.

    UPGRADE CHECK LIST:
Run through this check list before the next upgrade attempt:

    1) remove nonessential hardware
    docks
    USB devices
    printers
    headset
    speakers
    bluetoot devices
USB drives (other than a windows 10 iso if used for the upgrade)
USB Wireless Mouse or Keyboard Receiver, USB Wireless Network Card

    2) These should be the only attached devices:
    wired mouse
    wired keyboard
    monitor

Any of these that have been done in the past week are not necessary to repeat:

    3) open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste: (repair file system)
    chkdsk /x /f /r
This may take many hours so plan to run overnight
Find the chkdsk report in the event viewer using the information in this link and post into the thread:
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

    4) open administrative command prompt and copy and paste: (repair operating system)
    sfc /scannow
    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    5) update windows (have all recommended updates installed) and reboot after updates

    6) uninstall all non-Microsoft antivirus software
(This includes always on and manual software.)

    7) Verify that the drive has > 27 GB free space (At least 25 GB is needed for creating dumps)

    8) Place the computer in clean boot:

    9) Remove all unused SATA devices

    10) Uninstall non-Microsoft disk encryption software

    11) Run disk cleanup to clean temporary and system files

    Download Windows 10

    voidtools

@zbook - The upgrade worked without a hitch this time. Fingers crossed it doesn't throw up any issues.

Reinstalled all three problem devices (Intel - via Windows update, IDT Audio & Bluetooth). Everything seems to be in order, so far at least. The Bluetooth installation required some tweaks as last time to get Windows to fully recognize the device.

All in all, the over-a-week's time spent on troubleshooting and the attempted fixes seem to have paid off although I'll keep watch over the next week or so for any mishaps. Hopefully, there will be none or they'll stay minimal. My only concern is the Bluetooth which has been the only gripe for me with Windows 10 until I lucked into a fix. The other one IDT audio - I don't really mind if it does throw up problems along the way. I can always rollback to Microsoft basic drivers which are good enough for me. It's unlikely I'll make any progress hunting for updated drivers.

Couldn't thank you enough for staying the course with me and for all the guidance in troubleshooting. Folks like you do all the work that's expected on the MS forums. The time spent with you on troubleshooting will hopefully keep me in good stead for all future upgrade issues, which is more than likely given the history.

It's unlikely I'll do another feature upgrade going forward when there's very little in terms of improvements for older machines. I think it makes better sense to stay with the current working version. MS should just focus on security updates and the like for us folks on outdated systems and not force these major upgrades causing issues. It will also help us save bandwidth.

I think I'll keep the thread open for a few more days for any just-in-case situations. Also, I may have to open a new topic pertaining to the usbhub.sys driver which has been causing BSODs in one particular situation over the last month and a half or so. Have yet to check if the upgrade has had a positive effect.

Thanks again and really appreciate your time and effort.:) A thanks should also go to the others who chipped in

    That's great news.
    You are very welcome.

Sometimes the older drivers work with the latest OS.

I'll check it out although the current driver doesn't seem to be causing a problem. I'll keep the older one handy just in case.
    Thanks

edit: For some reason I never get the desktop notification when there's a new post. Settings are all fine.

Just checked the link. That's exactly the one I have installed. That's the only one available too on Dell website. There used to be two versions (of all drivers) available about a year or two back.

    Lots of progress made.
I'm very glad the Windows upgrade worked after all of the troubleshooting steps.
Approximately every six months there is a major Windows upgrade.
Please save all of the steps so that you have them for the next upgrade.
If there are any other problems or if you need any additional help please post a new beta log collector.
