Sometimes the logs display the exact problem.
Other times it takes several upgrade failures to decode the error messages and error codes.
Other times running through a troubleshooting checklist may work.
If the above fail having a Macrium backup image may enable an end user to clean install the new OS and restore the image.

For drivers the information that you are able to see is about updates.
The most up to date Windows operating system can become corrupt.
So the most up to date drivers can become corrupt.
The goal is to replace misbehaving drivers with stable drivers.
This may be the most up to date driver or at times a rolled back driver.

For any misbehaving driver at this time the best option is to uninstall the software.
The software can be installed after a Windows upgrade.
Sometimes there are hardware drivers that are incompatible with a Windows upgrade.
At times a USB wireless is used after an upgrade if the wireless driver was incompatible with the upgrade.

The plan is to tune up the computer.
Then run through a check list.
Then optimize for an upgrade to get logs for troubleshooting.
If lucky these steps work before the log troubleshooting.
If not lucky then the logs are troubleshooted to look for information about the specific error message and code.


There were two new mini dumps and these were the misbehaving drivers identified:

Run memtest86+ version 5.01 for at least 8 passes.

The testing is done not by time but by passes.
The more passes the better.
There are a significant number of false negatives if fewer than 8 passes are made.
A false negative is a test pass when there is malfunctioning RAM.
There is 8 GB of RAM on the computer.
Memtest86+ version 5.01 testing takes approximately 1 - 2 hours /GB RAM
Just 1 error is a fail and you can abort testing.
Then test 1 RAM module at a time in the same DIMM each for 8 or more passes.
b) When Memtest86+ version 5.01 has completed 8 or more passes use a camera or smart phone camera to take a picture and post an image into the thread.

The goal is to replace misbehaving drivers with stable drivers.

What does one do when a stable driver can't be found (either as an update or a rollback)?

For any misbehaving driver at this time the best option is to uninstall the software.

What good is 'uninstalling' when the drivers are left untouched in the drivers dir and you're forced to resort to unsafe methods.

Is the memory test essential at this point?

Wouldn't it be worth a try to give the upgrade another go by uninstalling every device that's not MS made. Continuing with the driver verifier would mean more agony for both me and the system. Not to mention the repeated hard power downs at every BSOD and to get back into safe mode. It does no good to the disk armature I\m sure.

Anyway, I\ll try the memory test next.

edit: I have the intel driver uninstalled and can't stand the 1024x768 resolution with no option to change. Wonder which intellectual at MS had this idea.

For misbehaving drivers the best option is to uninstall and then re-install from the computer or motherboard manufacturer website.
When drivers are not listed the next best option is the component manufacturer (Intel, Nvidia, AMD, Killer Networks, Realtek, etc.)
Only for extenuating circumstances are the driver websites used as you don't know what you are getting.

For any driver that you are unsure about its un-installation the driver can be renamed.
For example: asdfghjkl.sys > asdfghjkl.old
The driver was not uninstalled but was renamed and should no longer be a misbehaving driver.

When there are multiple misbehaving drivers identified and / or the dumps display memory it is useful to rule in / rule out RAM / DIMM / MB problems. With 8 GB RAM a significant portion of the testing can be run overnight. The testing comes in different qualities. The more the passes the better the testing environment. It sometimes takes passes into the 20s to find malfunctioning RAM. A minimum of 8 passes is needed. Use a camera or smart phone camera to take a picture and post an image into the thread. If there is just 1 error you can abort testing. Then remove 1 RAM module and test each RAM module in the same DIMM for 8 or more passes.

That's right . The MS basic drivers are barely any good. You can get by, that's it.

Again, I've been through this already. Those never work because there aren't any updates for my configuration. I do make it a practice to check these every few months but come up empty handed.

I'm planning to run the memory test tonight and will report back when it's done.

Windows has installed a default Microsoft driver for the Intel GPU.
There should be an Intel GPU driver available on either the Dell or Intel websites.
As a backup plan Intel has free support.

Once the computer has been tuned up the upgrade will be performed with a Windows 10 iso and no connection to the internet. If the upgrade is successful with the iso, Windows updates can then be performed.
Using a Windows 10 iso instead of the Windows support assistant often generates a better error code. For example an extend code.

Once there are no more misbehaving drivers Windows driver verifier can be run for 36 hours of typical computer use to complete the testing. Then an upgrade checklist will be posted. After completing the checklist the Windows 10 iso should be used to upgrade. If lucky it will upgrade. If not lucky it will generate logs for troubleshooting with the newest error code.

Actually, I do have all the driver downloads (be it Intel or Dell) that are already available at their respective sites. It's just that there aren't/haven't been any updtaes in a long time. As I mentioned before they have moved on and it's futile to expect any drivers for a 5+ year model. As a matter of fact, Dell has made it clear there will be no Windows 10 support for Inspiron N5010 at Windows 10release time itself.

I'll send them (Intel) a mail anyway and see how it goes.

So, that means I 'm required to continue with the verifier once I'm done with the memory test, correct?

Old drivers can be installed from the Dell or Intel websites.
Windows will then update the installed old drivers.
The driver will then be replaced with a new driver file.
If there are recurrent misbehaving drivers for hardware the driver can be rolled back to look for a stable driver.
Other times recurrent misbehaving drivers indicate a problem with the underlying hardware.
At this time the Dell website should be used for a Dell tested driver. Then Windows updates should be done to use the most up to date version / build.

So, you suggest I install all the older drivers and let Windows update them and in the process fix any corrupt drivers, right?

But what should be my immediate step after the memory86 test. Continue with driver verifier until there are no more BSODs and then install the older drivers? Or, finish the verifier, then try an upgrade and install the older drivers and let Windows update them as you mentioned?

edit: I would like to state here that whether the drivers are corrupt or not, I haven't had any performance related issue with any of the so called misbehaving drivers (except for Bluetooth which I lucked into a solution during the last upgrade from 1703 to 1709 and have had no issues with Bluetooth since then) Infact, I wouldn't even know these drivers were misbehaving if not for the verifier test.
