Upgrading from 1709 to 1803 via USB

I'm running into a bunch of errors when trying to install this update via windows update. I've tried almost everything to get it working. So I was going to try to do the update via booting from my USB stick. I've already burned the ISO to my USB via the media creation tool. I booted to the USB and it then gives the option to "Install". I just want to make sure when I click this it does an upgrade from 1709 to 1803 and does NOT wipe my entire OS.

Then don`t boot from the usb stick, just right click on the Iso file ( if you saved it ) and choose to open with windows explorer and do the update, just click on setup.

If you didn`t save the Iso, you`ll have to download it. Use the download tool again and this time save the Iso file instead of creating a usb stick.

    Download Windows 10

No need to boot from the stick. Are you certain you want to install 1803 already ? Much too soon in my opinion.

You CAN boot from the usb stick, but DO NOT choose custom install, choose to keep all your programs and files. But that way is risky too. Opening the Iso file from within windows 1709 is safer and quicker.

Remember, ALWAYS back up your data :) If possible, you should create an image of 1709 with Macrium Reflect before you do anything.

And I suppose you could just use the USB stick and open it in explorer to do the same thing.

    Proceed with caution.

Thanks for the reply. Yup, I've already tried mounting the ISO and running the setup.exe directly. Always gives an error halfway through. Also already have a macrium backup :)

Maybe the download was bad, worked fine for me when I tested it.

Just tried to do the upgrade via USB. After I hit upgrade it says this option is not available and I have to install from within windows. Oh well, back to troubleshooting the error.

    @bobsagetfullhou, this will help.

Microsoft | Resolve Windows 10 upgrade errors : Technical information for IT Pros

Included in the guide are these sections...

If the upgrade process is not successful, Windows Setup will return two codes:

    1. A result code: The result code corresponds to a specific Win32 or NTSTATUS error.
    2. An extend code: The extend code contains information about both the phase in which an error occurred, and the operation that was being performed when the error occurred.

Resolution procedures for various result+extend codes you may encounter are listed in this section...

There are also sections explaining the various log files.

Thanks! Hopefully I can track down the issue this way.

Did you disable any 3rd party AVs? I always do that for major updates.

    Sensible precaution.

    3rd-party AVs may be implicated in failed installs that have error codes 0xC1900101 - 0x20004, 0xC1900101 - 0x40017 or 800704B8 - 0x3001A, according to https://docs.microsoft.com/windows/d...ion-procedures
