But still as an error, which makes no sense at all!
It's just the way the log file gets populated... all API's return a value... either the error code or in the case of no error, "0"

It's standard in C++ programming to "If (return 0)" to make sure the call ran successfully.

every time i restart my machine after the april update in event viewer itake this error:

Can not start the DCOM server: {995C996E-D918-4A8C-A302-45719A6F4EA7} as Unavailable / Unavailable. The error:
    "298"
happened at the start of this command:
    C: \ WINDOWS \ System32 \ rundll32.exe C: \ WINDOWS \ System32 \ shell32.dll, SHCreateLocalServerRunDll {995C996E-D918-4a8c-A302-45719A6F4EA7} -Embedding

Anyone has a clue hot to fix it?
I noticed the exact same error on 1803 Win 10 Pro 64 v17134.83. No help from hours of troubleshooting in Google/Microsoft. Upgrading to 17134.137 made the problem worse, adding non-functional start button to the list. Downgrading back to 17134.1 still has original symptom, and upgrading from there to .137 is still worse. Now I've restored my original 17134.83 system (and the original error).

Registry search shows this is related to the ShellExperienceHost app.

There's one piece of advice I kept running into during my research, which I haven't yet tried: fresh, or refresh install of Windows 10. I'm at the point now where my efforts to fix this are about as large as the effort to migrate and re-install all my software. :-(

I'm now on a pristine Win 10 17134.137 image, after burning the iso file d/l from MS, and deleting all the partitions on Disk 0. Installation from DVD to clean disk drive went well, and so did the first round of updates and a few extra reboots. The error 10001 still persists, both after the DVD install (17134.1) and the updated install (.137).

Given the low reporting of this on the 'net, and the above experiment, I shift my suspicion over to old 2010 vintage MB hardware (ASUS P6X58D-E) and related drivers (and possibly related launching of Shell Experience Host or Autoplay…). Do you guys also have older hardware? Or ASUS MB? Why does this afflict so few of us, I wonder.
