    Installation failure during Clean Install of Version 1803


    I recd. version 1803 thru Windows Update & it started installing, but went into a loop "Downloading" & "Installing". So version 1803 was never installed. Next I downloaded the ISO image using the Media Creation Tool & made a bootable USB Flash drive using Rufus. While trying "Clean Install" following the procedure outlined here after copying files (51%), the computer shut down automatically (probably due to overheating, though no other programs were running). Now it won't boot even from the bootable USB Flash drive. On Power on I see "Preparing automatic repair" then "Select an account..you must sign in as as administrator to continue, but there aren't any administrator account on this PC ...Forgot your password or don't see your account?" Seek your help.

    hi laymen

    So when you said you followed the process for clean install here did you mean Brink's clean install tutorial. Secure boot off and Fast boot off in BIOS.

    I appreciate you want to use Rufus but might I suggest you don't.

    The media creation tool will create a bootable USB key that works with Legacy boot and UEFI. Might you try the creation again.

    With a laptop might also suggest propping the back up to help with airflow if you suspect Heat. Had a another member whose device power down because a critical battery event. If yours is removal try with it out.

    Thanks Ken. I had followed the procedure outlined in the tutorial with Fast boot & Secure boot disabled. I had downloaded the ISO file on my HD & as such used Rufus to create bootable USB stick. I always prop up the laptop on some support clearing the inlet vents while working. However, I suspect it is a cooling problem & probably the fan is not working. I'll send it to a Repair shop for Hardware check-up. Meanwhile I tried restoring a System Image I had of Windows 8.1 using Macrium. The System Image was created by Macrium & I used the Bootable Rescue Disk created earlier by Macrium. The operation claimed to have been completed successfully. But now I am getting error code 0xC0000225 with Recovery screen asking for the Installation Disk of Windows 8.1. If the hardware problem is solved I'll try again for Clean Install of Windows 10, version 1803.

    Sorry for troubling you again, Ken. I had given the laptop for repair. The repair guy informed that he has replaced two ICs on the Motherboard which were causing overheating problem. He had not touched the OS or other files already loaded on the Hard Disk. As mentioned previously, I had tried restoring System Image of Windows 8.1 from an External HD using Bootable Rescue Media with Win PE created using Macrium Reflect. But the laptop is unable to boot & asking for Installation Media of Windows 8.1. I've an Windows 8.1 ISO file on the External HD. Can I use it "unmounted" or shall I have to create a bootable USB stick thru Rufus? Secondly, I also have the bootable ISO of Windows 10, version 1803. Shall I try "Clean Install" directly using it? Which is a better option? I've no CD Key of Windows as my laptop came with Windows 8 Pre-installed (OEM) & I had subsequently upgraded to Windows 10 later versions, which are Digitally Certified in Microsoft Activation Server.

    If you`ve already had W10 on it or even if you haven`t it will see your W8 key and it should auto activate.

    Just my honest opinion, but it`s too soon to install 1803, I would install 1709, it works great :) upgrade to 1803 in 4 or 5 months.

    And of course you can use Rufus, it works perfectly. Choose the scheme you need, either MBR or GPT and burn it. I think you`ll need at least an 8 GB usb stick.

    AddRam has answered.

    Only thing I would add is it might be difficult to control not getting 1803 once 1709 installed. Do you have Pro edition of Windows...or you might have to set any connection to internet to be metered.

    Thanks AddRam & Ken. I had Windows 10 Home. So I can't stop receiving updates except by setting to "Metered Connection".
