Windows 10: Changing to Windows 10 Pro Solved

    Changing to Windows 10 Pro

My desktop has W10 Pro with updates deferred for 60 days. My laptop is plain old home. I would like to make it a Pro installation. I know how to do that but I would like to do it before it gets the 1803 release. If I boot it now I am afraid it will automatically update itself before I can make the switch to Pro.

How can I prevent that from happening?

    Thank you.

Automatic updates do not start until May 8th. The upgrade from Home to Pro only takes a few minutes but you need a Pro licence or buy an upgrade from MS Store of course.

    Hi there.

If you still have (or can get) legit / legal copies of one of these OS'es W7 PRO / W7 Utimate / W8 PRO or W8.1 Pro the FREE upgrade is still working.

Beware though if you source these off the Internet. Ideally if you have old TechNet (you don't even need the ISO just the keys) versions or MSDN or even an old retail copy then download Ms MCT and update (free !!). Enter the W7/W8/W8.1 key on W10 install.

Once installed switch to Ms account so the activation changes to a digital licence --then you can log out and logon again with local account. After that you can clean install etc with no probs at all.

    Cheers

The link below will take you to an article with a list of Windows 10 generic product keys that you can use.
Windows 10 Product Activation Keys (All Versions)
The first key in the Windows 10 section is a pro key. You should be able to use this key to do an in-place upgrade without reinstalling your OS and wiping your data.

Now that you have Pro, you should wait at least 2 or 3 months to install 1803, but if you are running 1703 you may not have a choice.

Are you getting any update messages from Microsoft ?
