They are not hidden. And... my disk which was nearly full (red) now is at about 50%.

    Ah.

I believe even prior versions of Windows would start purging old "data" once the C drive became full. Not sure whether that is automatic- it's been a very long time since I tripped that particular aspect of the OS.

Windowz10, I have been using PCs with HDDs filled up to the top since their capacity was 10 Mbytes... (before this they were too expensive or on mainframes). This is not usual.

I have the same problem!! I upgraded my computer from windows 7 to windows 10. It worked fine until i rebooted. All my operating system folder shows empty with 0 bytes in them. The folders are: Windows, Windows.old, Users, Program Files, Program Files x86 etc. The folders also shows empty using the cmd prompt. All setting in Windows explorer are set correctly to show hidden and protected system files. I have two hard drives running a RAID1(mirror). I used a recovery program, plugged one of the hard drives into another computer and I can see all the files that windows cant see and they are there and healthy. I have no idea whats going on!!! I am thinking of making an image of one of my disks and then write it to a new hard drive to see if those folders shows the files that's in them. I have posted this to the Microsoft site but haven't received much help. Here is the link where i posted it : Windows only booting to a blinking cursor

    Any help will be appreciated.
