I used my activated Windows 7 (older pc with 7 on it, not the key during win10 install) to install Windows 10 on an upgrade March 30th this year. It activated. So I made the USB installer with the MCT, then wiped and installed it clean on said PC. Activated on its own with digital license to a MS account I made during the upgrade. I am using it now to watch an eagle nest live stream
Ha, did you see the Eagle jump on to the pitchers shoulder before the Mariners/Twins home opener ?

They had an Eagle fly in before the beginning of a race a few weeks back, that was awesome. :)

To get the free Win10 I've only Upgraded over activated/running Win7 and Win8.1 computers, after that a clean install seem to work fine as for the activation as long as I was connected to the 'net. I have done a few WinXP computers by first Upgrading to Win7 then to Win10, didn't take more than a couple extra hours.

Yes, install W7 and make sure it's activated. Once verified, you can upgrade to W10. The license will transfer and no keys are needed. When installing/upgrading Windows 10, I highly recommend skipping the "Use Microsoft account to sign in to his PC" and rather use a local account. This makes managing the system a lot easier.

Once you have Windows 10 installed and activated, connect it to an MS account by opening any Microsoft App and answering YES when Windows asks if you want to let all Apps use the account. Once all this is done the Activation status will change to "Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account"

If you ever need to clean install the PC, now, because your MS account contains a digital license, you won't have to enter any keys anywhere ever again. Just connect the PC to your MS account and it will automagically activate.
Thank you slicedice and others for your good advice, but a miracle has happened, I was about to restore it back to W7, had my ISO ready, but then decided to check settings and ..... Windows is activated with digital license.

The activation servers sometimes take their time getting round to issuing a license. As I recall, back in Aug. 2015 when I took the free upgrade it took a couple of hours before activation happened.

Didn't Microsoft only offer free upgrades from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 10 Pro for a short period of time and then stopped it?

I had registered my interest in the free upgrade from W7Ux64 to W10Px64 before it was released and I upgraded after the time period had expired. I was on the phone to MS for over an hour as they kept telling me that I was no longer eligible for it, then the bloke spoke to his supervisor and low and behold his supervisor told him to allow me to activate. I was instructed to download the Windows 10 Setup installer package or MediaCreationTool from a URL they gave me. The version of that setup was 10.0.14393.0.

I have an Acer Aspire One AO533 Intel Atom N455 circa 09/10 with Win7 Starter and a couple of weeks ago I attempted an upgrade using the Win7 Starter keys and the Upgrade proceeded without any problems and upgraded it to Win10 Home 32. I just replaced the HHD to a WD 3D NAND 1TB and did a clean install without keys and it activated. I also have a purchased 32/64 Home,Pro,Education key and for the heck of it tried Pro and Home 64 bit with my RAM maxed out at 2GB and it is about the same slothyness as 32 Home so I left the 64 in and presently am dual booting 7&10. It took me this long to upgrade because I felt 10 would be too demanding on this little Atombomb Netbook and even now the Win 7 keys still worked. Realistically Win10S might be better but I don't know due to difficulties getting it!

Thanks for posting this information about Starter Edition.

How's your "Atombomb" running Windows 10? Smooth ride?
