Are you sure both laptops were running Windows 10 Pro? Was the original OS's OEM versions?

Yep from the message you posted in reply #7 it sounds like you had Home on one PC and Pro on the other.

But you said they were both Pro so..... Hmmm

[QUOTE=t2pack;1335565]Not a back up. I took the ssd out of the activated machine that's about to die and put it into the the activated machine that had a slower spinning drive as I didn't want to have to reinstall all my programs.[/QUO

I would try a repair install, it might let the activation server see that you have a license for that hardware and move the activation. Probably should have removed the activation from the hard drive you took out though. May still see that there are 2 OS on One License.

the other solution would be to extract the Key from the hard drive OS and then change the Key on the computer with the SSD in it now. ShowKey Plus is a great way to extract the keys.

The keys are tied to your Mother Board so if you can get that hard drive back in and run long enough to extract the keys that should work for you

The problem is he's taking the drive ( A ) from one license system and putting into another different license system ( B ) and a course MS will flag it since it has the incorrect license for that system . What he first should try is re enter the Windows 7 keys from system ( B ) under Change Product Key and try to reactivated that way, if by chance that fails than a repair options will be the next step .

I did it when my HP desktop died and it worked and was still activated. The new desktop is now a dual boot setup. One drive is the OEM Home version that came with it and the other drive is the retail version of Windows 10 Pro that is from my old computer. This was with a full retail version. I don't know if it will work with a OEM version.
