Hi Simrick, You probably won't like this but in the interval between my last post and your latest posts meant that I have only just seen your details of the Macriun Reflect fix. I have been building on the success of my clean install and so my thoughts now are that I will be better off with a clean system anyway, as it was very cluttered and something had happened that made it very slow (not viral). And as this will be my backup laptop now I think I will quit while I may be ahead! Just got to do some more testing for reliability and further down the line I may partition it. And new laptop should be with me on Wednesday so all my attention will be on that. Thank you for your helpful assistance.

topgundcp, I'm assuming that your fix relates to my original problem of not being able to boot? If so, I am no longer in need of a possible cure for the failure to boot, but many thanks to you and Simrick for your help.

And thanks to zbook for your extreme patience, also Barman58 and f14tomcat, and anyone else I missed.

It really is great to know I can rely on many good folk on here who are prepared to assist dozy old fools like me!

I will leave the thread open for a few more days, just in case...
