Windows 10: Upgade Failing Solved

    Upgade Failing

I am upgrading from 8.1 to 10. I used the Media Creation tool to do it. It gets stuck at "Making sure your ready" for 13 hours. I am reversing it now. Any ideas?

Could I make an ISO from Media Creation tool and use it to upgrade or worst case a clean install? Would it activate properly? I have an image of 8.1 as well as a backup of data. A clean install is OK by me if it will activate.

There are many cases of failed attempts trying to upgrade 8.1>10 via Media Creation Tool in-place method. Way too many to even try to give examples. Best advice you're gonna get is create a bootable media (thumb or DVD) and clean install. Too much baggage to try to figure out. Make sure you have backed up all your personal files first, and preferably a full system backup of current 8.1 first.

    Then clean install:

This still works: Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First Windows 10 Tutorials

Download the ISO (as mentioned in tutorial @f14tomcat mentions above), copy GatherOsState.exe to your 8.1 desktop, run it as admin and save the GenuineTicket.xml file it generates to a USB drive or whatever.

Then clean install (skipping any requests for keys) and then copy the GenuineTicket.xml into Windows 10 C:\ProgramData\etc directory as described in the tutorial above.

I did this for an 8.1 system last week and it activated fine.

Thanks f14tomcat and lx07. Worked great. Windows 10 is activated and seems to be running well. Guess I'll do some updating to bring them up to date. Thanks again.
