That ok, thanks for the pointers which may still come in handy. Right now it's still churning on the updating which seems to be an ordeal.

The problem was fixed by blocking Windows from updating the Intel HD 3000 graphics driver.

You can use "WSUS Offline Update", to update any computer running Microsoft Windows and Office safely, quickly and even without an Internet connection.

You can also manually install Intel HD 3000 graphics driver.

I did install the graphics driver manually because the one Windows kept installing would cause the computer to lock up. This was a trial and error process. Once I found the problem, I blocked Windows from doing automatic driver updates.
