Ive always done the manual Diskpart methods in full to prepare the flash drive so that the Media Creation Tool can create the media automatically itself. Its worked flawlessly for the last year or so. But this week it failed twice for me with the same error message. Check out my post on the forum yesterday for more detail. I just wanted to let other users know

I got it to work! It hanged for me at 50% as well, with the same error code. This is what I did:

    • Run cmd as admin and enter the following:
    • diskpart
    • list disk
    • select disk x (where x is the disk number of your usb)
    • clean
    • convert mbr
    • exit

After this I created a new partition on it:

    • Windows+X
    • Select disk management
    • Right click your usb and select New simple volume

From there I created a new volume with FAT32, default allocation and a full format (I unchecked quick format).
After this I restarted my pc, ran the tool and it worked.
I confirm this method works. FINALLY! Thank you for this!

The windows 10 iso can be downloaded to the desktop.
Then open file explorer > this PC > C: > identify the iso > click on it to launch setup or setup.exe > this should enable you to perform an in place upgrade repair:
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

If the in place upgrade works you are set.
If it fails the run setupdiag https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...rade/setupdiag and open a new thread in: https://www.tenforums.com/installation-upgrade/

It seems that the method you've described sometimes works but not always. I had already done the same as you. I always do that just as a precaution before using the Media Creation Tool. It still failed at 50% though. That method had worked perfectly though for me several times until it failed at 50% again a few weeks ago. I tried it a couple of times with two different USB flash drives but it still wouldn't work

Strange indeed! It may hides 2 problems into one... It's been a while since I started to have this issue. I used Rufus on this USB key before getting this issue. As soon as I did the method described above, It worked for the very first time in a long time. I first though Windows Defender was the cause by blocking itself from doing admin stuff on an external device. Well, I guess this issue needs to get more attention to solve the other 50 %.
