I can't find anything that requires an OS to be on Disk 0. As you can see by my pic, I have 4 multi-boot partition OS's installed on what Windows decided was Disk 3 (On SATA Port 0), and 1 installed on Disk 1 (SATA Port 2). Disk 3 is the boot disk as seen by the BIOS on SATA port 0. All a bit confusing at first glance, but to answer your question, No, I can't find any MS hard documentation that it must be Disk 0. Obviously here, it is not. My Disk 0 (as seen by Windows) is all data and backups. Probably confused more than helped, but that's what I have.
Many thanks.
My question was wrong, for which I am really very sorry.
In fact, what I meant is : is there anything official (i.e. from MS) that relates to the disk numbering and major upgrades.
As you may see from this thread I was facing problems upgrading to 1803, each upgrade ending up with a BSOD.
After days and days of trying various scenarios, in the end and as recommended, I disabled SATA port 1 (in BIOS) so DISK , with Windows, became DISK 0.
The upgrade went flawlessly. Enabling the SATA port again, after the upgrade, DISK 0 became disk 1, but Windows kept on running fine.
Now, this weird disk enumeration matter, I can't find anything about it.
That aside, how did you proceed when upgrading to 1803?
The following is just my personal experience, hence the comment. It may be totally irrelevant to your case:
I've not seen anything official- when I ran into a small snag upgrading from 1607 to 1703 MS support commented about disk numbering starting from 0 instead of 1.
I had clean installed 1511, and upgraded sequentially with no trouble. My system disk was 1.
I found that if I clean installed 1703, my system disk was disk 0, but if I upgraded, it remained 1.
That's my personal experience, and I've not seen any comment that might relate to it.
Okay dalchina, many thanks indeed.
I was hoping you might have a link to some document. Reason is that I recommend someone else, having a similar setup, disk 0 HDD, disk 1 SSD with Windows to really disable the SATA port to disk 1.
But obviously I then prefer to, let's say, 'substantiate' my claim with some link or document or whatever...
Anyway, no problem, thanks again!
Unfortunately not. His comment was quite specific about increasing the number of disks from 9 to 10.
The impact was that whilst upgrading from 1607-1703 apparently succeeded- no errors- the Advanced Startup options were no longer available, RE disabled. If I clean installed 1703 they were. Finally I noted the disk number difference, so can only assume a connection. As you can see the laptop has a fixed configuration.
