For automatic upgrades through Windows Update, no. But that's fine, because you MUST perform an in-place upgrade in order to get the free upgrade. You are free to clean install after the first required upgrade, which you can do by using the Media Creation Tool available on Microsofts website. You cannot clean install if you have not first upgraded, as the activation servers will not have your hardware profile associated with your old key.

Nor would it appear can you keep a dual boot system with the previous OS.

Then again, one thing I haven tried doing yet:

    1) create an image copy of the existing os first
    2) do the free update to c:
    3) wipe the free update and then reinstall a clean version of windows 10
    4) restore the prior OS version to a different drive

    Sheesh.

if you want clean you will loose your sérial
    just upgrade at first
save your sérial when win 10 activated
and you can install clean any other time
