    NavyLCDR's solution worked!

What a wonderful new year. Seems there really was some issue with getting it to do stuff off of usb, and once it was on a partition on the system drive everything was dandy. A bit of a convoluted workaround but at least it works!

also, just got access to another windows machine and tried making the drive using rufus, wouldn't even boot from it. Odd stuff.
Rufus is too needlessly complicated and I recommend NEVER using it. There is no need to. Glad copying the ISO file to the hard drive worked!

I would like to reiterate that the solution provided by NavyLCDR worked for me as well. Also, it might be interesting to know that this was a Lenovo G570 that I was having this issue with.

I have the same problem and have tried Dell, Windows, Rufus, and other installers with no luck. Is there any chance you or someone else can type out the instructions without the assumptions of in-depth knowledge for those of us not fully computer saavy? I'm not following the narrative style of your post and don't know how to do things like mount ISO files or even find the ISO file.

    Thanks

Hey, I'd recommend just giving it a crack - the tools are pretty self explanatory (eg the windows usb creator is super easy to use).

For the iso file, it is just a download, and to mount an iso, it is as simple as right-clicking on the iso file and selecting mount.

    Cheers,

I'm here in 2020 and the advice from @NavyLCDR worked for me too! However the windows re-install didn't solve my unfathomable system glitches. So back to the drawing board. Thanks for letting me rule out a corrupt windows process or driver or summat.

Using file explorer copy the Windows 10 ISO file from the second USB flash drive to the partition on the hard drive you created. In Kyhi's recovery tools, mount the ISO file from the hard drive. Do Windows setup as normal, pick the remaining unallocated space on the hard drive to install to.

Another option is to create a 5 gb FAT32 primary partition at the end of the hard drive instead of an NTFS partition. Mark the FAT32 partition as active. Then mount the ISO file from the second USB flash drive you copied it to. Copy all the files and folders from the mounted ISO file to the FAT32 partition you made on the hard drive. Remove all USB flash drives and reboot the computer from it's hard drive and then install Windows 10 to the remaining unallocated space.

How can I mount the ISO file if I have the file copied to a usb stick and also copied to a 10GB partition I have created on a brand new hard drive (as old one died)? I confused about Kyhi's tools not sure which tool I might need, as I can only access bios and win10 installer from another usb stick. Trying this method of using the ISO copied to a partition on the new hard drive to try and successfully install win 10.

If you are booted into Kyhi's Recovery Tools, just open file explorer, right click on the ISO file and select mount.
