I have a very fast PC with everything high spec, and 200Mbits download speed, yet mine takes forever as well, it has been 24 hrs so far for this update Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3213986). its just rediculous. Microsoft really need to do something about this, their servers don't seem to be powerfull enough to cope.

If I get out of bed at 4.30 to 5 a.m. and use the settings/update the download and install is swift and smooth. This routine is the total opposite if it is after 5 p.m. Then the download will take all night and the install will go on into the early morning hours. Through the day is also a slow process. My interpretation is the number of people using the specific service at the receiving end.
What is confusing is the fact I can get a strong download from the catalog and that specific Kb install goes along as others describe. Then I can use that huge standalone downloaded file on a second machine. It does not contain the extras, Flash, Malicious tool. Those I downloaded manually. Two machines was approx. 2 hours total at less than 5mbits speed.
At a 200mbits download I would be talking to the server and questioning if there is throttling going on during specific hours.

There is no throttling, I just downloaded a 4.5gb download from Microsoft server and it took me 1minute 30 seconds my provider is brilliant never had a problem, I think it is the update servers at Microsoft where the problem lays. It has sat now at 95% for the last 5 hours, looking at the stats in updates the file has failed 5 times, yet other updates have come down fine. Lets try and figure that one out.

That failed install happened to me with the Dec update on the laptop. After 3 times I gave up and took it to a tech service. He used the(free) software clean/repair tool referenced here often to clear out presence of previous attempts and the install went in without fault. Now I cannot recall the name of that tool. But removing any traces of previous download solved the issue.

Tweaking.com is the source of the repair tool

I was having a lot of trouble with this update as well. If you want to make this happen fast go to Microsoft and download the update and manually install it.

Go to Microsoft Update Catalog, key in the KB you want, KB3213986 in this case, and download it. About 1GB. Now to prepare your system, if you have had issues run the Windows trouble shooter. (Part of Windows 10). Best to run once just to be sure.

Type troubleshooting in the Cortana search bar, troubleshooting appears at top.
Click it, window opens, lower right side "Fix problems with Windows Update", click.
Window opens, click on “advance”, click on Run as administrator, click “Next”.
Should run clean. If not run again.

With it clean, type services into Cortana, Services Desk top app will appear at top. Click it. Scroll down the the Windows Update services. If it is running stop it. The Windows Update service must be stopped to manual install. Once stopped find your downloaded file and double click. Restart computer.

If you have been on one screen for 12 hours that says updating you are in a loop. Did you back up you data before you started the upgrade?
