I restarted the computer without the USB and got the message: "No bootable device. Insert boot disk and press any key."
Do you have access to another computer right now? If so, download Partition wizard Bootable CD (the last one in the link). Burn it in a blank CD or in a USB flash stick.

Boot into Partition Wizards GUI following this instructions. When you are on the last screen, take a camera snap of the screen and upload the snap here.

We need to see the partitions and parameters. It will give us a bit more information as to what is going on there.

I discovered a way to download Windows 7 in various editions from Microsoft yesterday, from a post here: Solved mediacreationtool not working (anymore) - Windows 10 Forums

Follow the instructions and also, it requires a download from here [JavaScript] Windows 10 Tech Bench Upgrade Program HACK - Pastebin.com to be pasted into the Microsoft download site to make a menu of official downloads appear.
It may save you from repurchasing the Windows 7 home premium disk, or getting it from a dubious source, as you already have a license.

    beat me.

You may also need to download Toshiba drivers, Satellite L745D-SP4172VM Support | Toshiba

Yep. I think I just saw it yesterday too and was pretty floored by it! Also, when you get the Home Premium or Profession ISO for Windows 7, it actually has 4 editions in it. You unlock the 4 editions by deleting the ei.cfg file before burning it to a DVD or after creating a USB from the ISO file.

If you run the Windows 10 DISM /get-wiminfo command on the install.wim file in the sources folder, it will show you the 4 editions contained in the WIM file.

Without downloading it, IIRC the 32-bit DVD also had the STARTER edition on it too.

HI, A quick search suggests: Go here:
Repair & Parts Support | Toshiba
and apparently you should be able to order a new disk.

An outside chance - you still have the recovery partition.. just need a way to access it.

While you're waiting, you could try formatting your hard disk and retrying win 10.. you could be lucky.

Hope you've everything you need backed up.

Disk imaging is incredibly useful. Had you been using it and created an image before attempting to ugrade, you could have restorerd your PC /(Win 7) exactly as it was.

E.g. Macrium Reflect or Aomei Backupper (free) + their boot disk/meidum + larger enough external storage.
Also acts as a full back up - ssave time, preserves you PC and your sanity.
Thanks for your help. I didn't back anything up because I didn't need anything on the laptop, I wanted a fresh start with it. I should have created a disk image, indeed!

I have a Windows Vista CD... would there be any point of installing this so I could at least view partitions, etc.?

No point in installing Vista. You can see the partition info if you select the custom install method when you boot from either the Windows 7 or Windows 10 installation DVD/USB. To do a completely clean install, select custom install, delete every partition shown on the hard drive and select just the unallocated space to install to.
